Accra's Tennis Stars Shine: Duvor Klu Dominates J30 Tournament with Double Victory!

The first week of the J30 Accra – Tennis Foundation Ghana Open, a significant event on the ITF World Tennis Junior Tour, has concluded, showcasing impressive talent from young players across Africa, Europe, and Asia. The tournament provided a platform for competitors to gain international experience and earn crucial ranking points, culminating in thrilling finals across all categories.

Ghanaian sensation Gwendolyn Duvor Klu emerged as a dominant force, securing both the Girls’ Singles and Girls’ Doubles titles. In the Girls’ Singles final, Klu faced her doubles partner, Togo’s Winner Gakpo, in an unusual but compelling encounter. Duvor Klu delivered a strong performance, winning in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2. This victory marked a significant improvement for the 16-year-old, who finished as runner-up in the previous year’s tournament. Despite initial nerves, Duvor Klu attributed her success to a focused game plan and improved tactical approach. Her triumph in Accra adds to an important period in her young career, following her recent senior national team debut for Ghana’s Diamond Rackets at the Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III tournament in Botswana.

Duvor Klu’s success extended to the Girls’ Doubles competition, where she partnered with Winner Gakpo. The top-seeded pair displayed a dominant performance in the final, defeating Nigeria’s Goodnews Eyinjuoluwa Aina and India’s Sharanya Sawant with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 scoreline. Their victory on home soil was a testament to their effective partnership and added another achievement to Duvor Klu’s remarkable campaign.

In the Boys’ Singles, China’s Ruoyu Hua was crowned champion. Ghana’s Jeff Frimpong, another promising local talent, reached the Boys’ Singles final, finishing as the runner-up after an impressive run in the competition.

The Boys’ Doubles title was claimed by the top-seeded pair of Yarden Shalom Gamlie of Israel and Shivtej Shirfule of India. Their path to the championship included a closely fought semi-final where they recovered from a first-set loss to defeat fellow Israeli Ran Berger and South Africa’s Hlumani Kekana 4-6, 6-3, 15-13 in a match lasting one hour and 26 minutes. Gamlie and Shirfule showed composure in the deciding match tie-break, edging their opponents 15-13. They faced Great Britain’s Denzel Darkey and Ghana’s Jeff Frimpong in the final. Darkey and Frimpong also demonstrated remarkable resilience in their semi-final, staging a strong comeback from a 0-6 first-set defeat against Australia’s Noah Kaneda-Hession and Nigeria’s Seyi Ebenezer Ogunsakin to win 6-4 in the second set and take the deciding tie-break 10-5. The final was a competitive encounter, with Gamlie and Shirfule ultimately securing the title.

Overall, the opening week of the J30 Accra tournament highlighted the strong performances of Ghanaian players, particularly Gwendolyn Duvor Klu’s double championship wins and Jeff Frimpong’s two finalist finishes (in both Boys' Singles and Doubles).
