Abia Governor Otti Confronts Tinubu Over Nnamdi Kanu's Release

Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, held a significant meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday. This encounter, observed around midday shortly after the president's meeting with service chiefs, is widely understood to be connected with ongoing efforts to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The meeting between Governor Otti and President Tinubu followed closely on the heels of the governor's recent visit to Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto correctional centre, where Kanu is serving a life sentence following his conviction for terrorism-related offences on November 20, 2025, by a Federal High Court in Abuja. This conviction has sparked protests and numerous calls for his release.
While the specifics of the discussions behind closed doors between Governor Otti and President Tinubu were not immediately disclosed, it is strongly believed that the meeting forms a crucial part of the intensified behind-the-scenes political and diplomatic strategy initiated by Otti. Governor Otti has consistently maintained that resolving Kanu’s case remains a priority for his administration and has reiterated his commitment to pursuing all legitimate avenues to secure Kanu's freedom.
During his visit to Kanu in Sokoto, Governor Otti was accompanied by Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; Abia State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma. Officials from the Sokoto State Government were also reportedly present. Ekeoma quoted Governor Otti as having encouraged Kanu to remain strong and affirmed that engagements initiated over two years ago had been intensified to secure his release. Following the prison visit, Governor Otti stated, "While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I’m happy to inform you that I have activated, and will continue to work on, the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured."
This coordinated effort, involving legal and political stakeholders, underscores Governor Otti's unwavering commitment to resolving the long-running matter at the federal level, with the meeting with President Tinubu being interpreted as a key step in advancing dialogue and exploring possible solutions.
