5 New BVN Rules Every Nigerian Bank Customer Needs to Know Before May 1
The CBN is changing how BVN works starting May 1, 2026. Social media has been talking about it, but mostly getting it wrong or leaving out the important parts. There are five changes, not one, and some of them will affect you more than you think.
Here is the full breakdown.
1. You Can Only Change Your Phone Number Once. That's It. Forever.
This is the big one. From May 1, you get one shot at changing the phone number linked to your BVN. Just one, and it’s for life.
Before now, you could update it whenever. Lost your line? Just go to the bank and change it. That era is over.
The CBN says this is to stop SIM swap fraud, which has been a serious problem. Makes sense. But it also means if you burn that one change and then lose access to the new number, you are in serious trouble. Think carefully before you do anything.
2. Your Account Can Be Frozen for 24 Hours If Something Looks Suspicious
Banks can now place your BVN on a watchlist and pause your transactions for up to 24 hours if they detect anything unusual on your account.
During that time, they will try to reach you to confirm whether the activity is actually you. If they can't get through, the freeze stays until they do.
This is good for catching fraud before money disappears. The problem is that it can also catch your own legitimate transactions. If you are doing a large transfer or something urgent, make sure your contact details are current, and your phone is on.
3. If You Are Under 18, You Cannot Get a BVN Anymore
The minimum age for BVN enrollment is now 18. Full stop.
Kids and teenagers will have to use accounts managed by a parent or guardian. They will not be getting their own BVN.
If you have a minor on your account setup currently, speak to your bank about what this means going forward.
4. Only Your Bank Can Fix Your BVN Issues Now
Third parties are out. The CBN has restricted access to the BVN database to licensed financial institutions only.
So if your name is misspelled or your date of birth is wrong or anything needs correcting, you have to go through your bank. No more agents, no more informal fixes, no more paying someone on the street to sort it out.
Just your bank. Officially, with paperwork.
5. Your BVN Details Need to Be Accurate or Your Account Will Have Problems
The entire system is getting stricter around data accuracy. KYC requirements are tighter. Banks are expected to make sure everything on your record is correct and verifiable.
If there are inconsistencies on your BVN — wrong name, wrong details, information that doesn't match across your accounts — you could start experiencing restrictions. On your account access. On loans. On transactions.
The responsibility is on you now to make sure everything is correct.
What to Do Before May 1
Check your BVN details today. Make sure the phone number registered is active and one you are keeping long term. Make sure your name and date of birth are correct. If anything is wrong, go to your bank now while there is still time to fix it.
May 1 is in a few days. Don't wait.
