2026 Jeep Cherokee Roars Back with XJ Heritage and Eye-Watering Price Tag

The return of the Jeep Cherokee in 2026 marks a significant moment for Stellantis, following a three-year absence from the competitive compact crossover SUV segment. This strategic hiatus draws parallels to Henry Ford's 1927 blunder with the Model T, which taught carmakers the importance of developing successors before discontinuing predecessors. For the sake of its employees and shareholders, Jeep hopes this belated re-entry is well-timed for current societal and regulatory environments.
The all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee, internally known as the KM, boasts a design that sharply diverges from the 2023 model. Design leader Vince Galante drew inspiration from the original XJ-generation Jeep Cherokee, a pioneer in the unibody SUV segment. This influence is evident in the new model's "Hip 2B Square" aesthetic, incorporating boxiness within wind tunnel constraints. Key design cues include a squared-off seven-slot grille flanked by U-shaped daytime running lights, trapezoidal wheel arches reminiscent of the XJ, and horizontally oriented taillamps evocative of Jeep’s jerrycan look. An upright, boxy D-pillar, embellished with a Germanic Hofmeister kink, addresses a major complaint of the outgoing KL Cherokee: insufficient cargo room, which has now increased by 25 percent.
Dimensionally, the new Cherokee has grown considerably, moving from Fiat-Chrysler’s Compact-Wide platform to Stellantis’ STLA Large platform. This results in a 6.1-inch increase in overall length and a 6.5-inch longer wheelbase, positioning it as potentially the largest compact or smallest midsize SUV, competing with models like the Honda CR-V, Ford Bronco Sport, Toyota RAV4, and Chevy Equinox. Width increases by 1.5 inches, while height slightly decreases by 0.3 inches. Nearly every interior dimension has been expanded, enhancing class competitiveness. Jeep has also focused on upgrading material quality, with upper trim levels like the Overland featuring sophisticated seat perforation patterns and an "Arctic" interior color scheme option.
For its launch, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be exclusively offered with an all-new hybrid powertrain. This system combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a two-motor planetary combiner hybrid system, powered by a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion (NCM) battery located under the rear passenger compartment. Notably, Stellantis has utilized Toyota’s patented hybrid design, made royalty-free through 2030, a strategic move to enhance electrification. The engine produces 177 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, with a net total system output of 210 hp and 230 lb-ft. This output subdivides the previous 2.4-liter naturally aspirated and 2.0-liter turbocharged options. Despite a slight reduction, the new Cherokee maintains a respectable 3,500-pound tow capacity, only 500 pounds shy of the old 2.0L turbo.
The hybrid powertrain significantly boosts fuel efficiency. While official EPA numbers are pending, estimates suggest 42/33/37 mpg city/highway/combined, a substantial improvement over the previous generation's 20–21/26–29/22–24 mpg. This efficiency, combined with a 13.7-gallon tank, projects an impressive 507-mile combined range, far exceeding the previous 348–379 miles. Jeep also suggests average commuters could spend less than $100 per month on gas.
All-wheel drive is standard, featuring Active Drive 1, which uses a power takeoff from the transverse hybrid powertrain to drive the rear axle on demand, disconnecting when not needed to save fuel. This system includes Auto, Sand, Snow, and Mud programs, with a front–rear torque split varying from 100/0 to 50/50. At launch, there won't be a dedicated Trailhawk off-road version or locking differentials, but a Trail Rated badge iteration is anticipated. The minimum ground clearance is 8.0 inches, slightly less than the outgoing model, but its 29.4-degree departure angle is best in class.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be available in four trim grades, with a starting price of $36,995 for the nicely equipped base model, featuring a standard roof rack, 10.3-inch cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a suite of safety features. This positions it close to the entry-level Grand Cherokee. Other trims include the Laredo ($39,995), Limited ($42,495), and the top-tier Overland ($45,995). The two upper trims will launch late 2025, with the base and Laredo following in early 2026.
This pricing strategy places the Cherokee at a premium within the compact hybrid SUV segment. Compared to competitors like the 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD, the base Cherokee is $2,945 more expensive. The Kia Sportage Hybrid S is $2,960 cheaper, and its X-Line off-road variant is a significant $9,060 less than the Cherokee Overland. While some Honda CR-V Hybrid trims (like the Sport Hybrid) are more expensive, others (like the TrailSport Hybrid) are considerably cheaper. On average, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee is about $3,827 more expensive than top-ranked small hybrid SUVs. Its hybrid-only offering means there's no cheaper gas-only variant to compete with entry-level models from other brands, a strategy Toyota will also adopt for the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid. Despite the higher price, Jeep might be banking on pent-up demand and emotional purchases after its three-year market absence.
