Zurich Festival Exclusive: Ulrich Köhler's 'Gavagai' Unveils Thrilling New Trailer

Ulrich Köhler's highly anticipated film “Gavagai” has recently made its presence known on the international festival circuit, marking its trailer debut with Variety and its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Saturday. The film is also slated for a screening at the Zurich Film Festival on Sunday, generating significant buzz. International sales for this new work are currently being managed by LuxBox, underscoring its global reach.
The narrative of “Gavagai” delves into a complex contemporary drama set against the backdrop of an ancient tragedy. The story primarily unfolds during the tumultuous production of a “Medea” adaptation in Senegal. Here, the character Maja, seeking solace amidst the challenging shoot, embarks on a love affair with her co-star, Nourou. The film then fast-forwards several months, bringing Maja and Nourou back together at the film’s premiere in Berlin. Despite the rekindling of old feelings, their reunion is severely disrupted by a deeply unsettling racist incident, which escalates tensions as all involved grapple with how to respond appropriately and "do the right thing." This parallel structure effectively contrasts the dramatic intensity of the on-screen "Medea" with the equally compelling and challenging contemporary issues unfolding in the lives of its characters.
Dennis Lim, the artistic director of the New York Film Festival, offered high praise for Köhler’s latest endeavor, highlighting the director’s established reputation for crafting "cunning, tonally surprising films about cross-cultural disconnection." Lim emphatically described “Gavagai” as Köhler’s "most ambitious and expansive film yet," further characterizing it as a "pinpoint-accurate account of moral crises and social biases, modern and ancient, internal and external." This commentary suggests the film tackles profound societal issues with nuance and depth, exploring the intricate dynamics of human interaction and systemic prejudices.
The accomplished cast bringing this compelling story to life includes Jean-Christophe Folly as Nourou, Maren Eggert as Maja, Nathalie Richard portraying Caroline, Anna Diakhere Thiandoum as Aïta, and Mateusz Malecki in the role of Kolakowski. The production team is led by producers Ingmar Trost and Clement Duboin, with Maren Ade serving as co-producer. The film’s development was spearheaded by the lead production company Sutor Kolonko, in collaboration with co-production partner Good Fortune Films.
Ulrich Köhler himself is no stranger to critical acclaim, with a distinguished filmography that precedes “Gavagai.” His earlier works, "Bungalow" (2002) and "Montag kommen die Fenster" (2006), garnered recognition at numerous festivals and received multiple awards. Notably, "Schlafkrankheit" (2011) earned him the prestigious Silver Bear for best director at the Berlinale. "In My Room" (2018) premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, and "A Voluntary Year" (2019), a collaboration with Henner Winckler, was screened in competition at Locarno. This rich history of acclaimed filmmaking sets a high bar for "Gavagai," positioning it as a significant addition to Köhler's oeuvre.
