Zimbabwe Shocks Bafana Bafana: Fans Outraged After World Cup Qualifier Upset

The crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Bafana Bafana and Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium concluded in a frustrating 0-0 draw, leaving South Africa's qualification hopes severely dented. Prior to the match, coach Hugo Broos emphasized its immense importance, stating, “By victory, we have a chance to qualify. By defeat, I think we can stop dreaming.” This match was essentially the second leg, following Bafana Bafana's 3-1 victory against Zimbabwe in June.
From the outset, Bafana Bafana pressed high, showcasing intent with Mohau Nkota and Oswin Appollis using their pace to challenge Zimbabwe’s deep defense. Despite creating numerous opportunities, the ball consistently eluded the goal line. Just before half-time, Nkota unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box that struck the post, with goalkeeper Washington Arubi beaten. At halftime, coach Broos made strategic changes, bringing on Thapelo Morena and Bathusi Aubaas for Nkota and Sphephelo Sithole.
The second half continued with Bafana Bafana pushing for a breakthrough. Lyle Foster appeared to have scored in the 54th minute, but Divine Lunga heroically cleared his shot off the line. Zimbabwe's challenge became even tougher when Knowledge Musona received a second yellow card in the 63rd minute, reducing the Warriors to 10 men. Even with a numerical advantage, South Africa struggled to penetrate the stubborn Zimbabwean defense. Foster again hit the inside of the post in the 82nd minute. The match saw another sending off late in stoppage time when Mbekezeli Mbokazi received his second booking within two minutes.
Player performances varied significantly. Sipho Mbule was highlighted as having a brilliant game, creating several chances but being unlucky not to score. Mbekezeli Mbokazi, despite his late red card, was praised for his defensive work and a decisive block in the dying minutes. However, striker Lyle Foster was singled out as the “worst Bafana player on the pitch,” missing clear opportunities and appearing “out of sorts.” Teboho Mokoena received a rating of 5/10, with some fans feeling he was “not ON today.” Rowen Williams, the South African goalkeeper, was tested by Zimbabwe's attempts on goal.
The outcome left Bafana Bafana supporters deeply frustrated. Social media was abuzz with discontent, with users questioning the lineup, the lack of creativity in midfield, Foster's effectiveness, and the overall effort against a team already out of World Cup contention. Tweets like "@GODinUs_ tweeted: 'These line up is not make sure the middle is not creative, Tebza is not ON today, Mbule is hiding behind zim players. This foster thing is being forced to our face. Sithole guy is very slow moving ball forward but good defensively,'" and "'We can do better, Foster is nonexistent or they don’t find him I don’t know. We need to just find the back of the net man and it’s coming' @mojalefa_leoli tweeted," reflected the collective disappointment.
The 0-0 draw had significant repercussions for South Africa's qualification quest. While Bafana Bafana now sit second on 15 points, their dream for 2026 is left uncertain, especially after Benin stunned Rwanda 1-0 in Kigali, increasing their lead at the top to 17 points. This result means South Africa no longer has destiny solely in their hands, making their path to their first non-automatic World Cup qualification since 2002 much more challenging.
Starting lineups for the match included:
South Africa: Williams (c), Mbokazi, Sibisi, Modiba, Mudau, Mokoena, Sithole, Mbule, Nkota, Apollis, Foster.
Zimbabwe: Arubi, Zemura, Garananga, Lunga, Hadebe, Billiat, Nakamba, Chirewa, Munetsi, Musona, Takwara.
