Zambian Opposition in Turmoil as Mundubile’s Tonse Alliance Move Sparks Expulsions and Court Battles

Zambia’s opposition politics has been thrown into fresh uncertainty following a controversial general conference of the Tonse Alliance, led by Danny Pule, which elected Brian Mundubile as Alliance president. The development has triggered immediate fallout within the Patriotic Front (PF) and provoked legal action from aggrieved founder members of the Front for Democracy and Development (FDD).
Patriotic Front National Chairperson Jean Kapata moved swiftly to distance the party from the outcome of the Tonse Alliance meeting, insisting that the conference holds no legitimacy or authority over PF affairs. She said Mundubile’s participation in what the party describes as a parallel and breakaway structure amounts to automatic self-expulsion from the PF. Kapata urged party members to remain calm and united, warning against being drawn into what she described as personal political ambitions and reaffirming that no individual is bigger than the PF as it prepares for its officially sanctioned General Conference.
Mundubile, now serving as Tonse Alliance chairperson and presidential candidate, confirmed that he will not contest the upcoming PF convention, saying his full focus is now on the alliance. He cited what he described as major political shifts in the country and called on opposition leaders to unite in safeguarding the UPND-led general elections scheduled for August 2026. Mundubile also said he intends to actively engage other opposition figures on issues affecting both the alliance and the broader public, adding that his running mate will be announced soon under the Tonse Alliance banner.
The political fallout has been compounded by emerging legal challenges involving the FDD. Founder members of the party have reportedly taken legal action against Chifumu Banda, seeking an injunction to block the use of the FDD name and structure in what they describe as “unknown alliances.” If the court grants the injunction, the Chris Zumani-led Tonse Alliance faction could be left without a legal party vehicle through which Mundubile could contest the presidency.
The FDD founders argue that the recent conference which installed Mundubile as president represents a decisive break from the Patriotic Front and accuse some PF Members of Parliament backing him of consistently supporting UPND-sponsored legislation in Parliament. They claim this behavior runs counter to both party positions and public expectations, raising questions about the authenticity of the opposition posture being presented.
FDD members have vowed to pursue the matter aggressively in court, saying they will not allow their party to be, in their words, “dented” by individuals they accuse of quietly aligning with the ruling UPND while presenting themselves as opposition. They further allege that the Tonse Alliance faction is being used to weaken opposition unity ahead of future elections.
Deepening the controversy, the FDD founders have described Chifumu Banda’s alleged role in handing the party to a group they claim is sympathetic to President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND as a betrayal of the late opposition leader Edith Nawakwi. They point to historical grievances, claiming individuals now associated with the Tonse Alliance had previously subjected Nawakwi to prolonged legal battles during her illness, highlighting how past political wounds continue to shape current realignments.
As court proceedings loom and party expulsions take effect, Zambia’s opposition landscape appears increasingly fragmented, with alliances, loyalties, and legal standing all under intense scrutiny ahead of the next electoral cycle involving the Patriotic Front and emerging coalitions such as the Tonse Alliance.
