INEC Extends 2027 Candidate Deadline as APC Questions Opposition Readiness
INEC's extension of the deadline for candidate submissions for the 2027 general elections has sparked a debate on party preparedness and electoral integrity. While the APC boasts of its organizational efficiency, some opposition parties welcome the extra time, raising concerns about challenges in candidate uploads. Civil society groups, however, are calling for electoral certainty and fairness amidst these adjustments.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit governorship and State House of Assembly candidates for the 2027 elections from August 8 to August 11.
INEC National Commissioner Mohammed Kudu Haruna said the extension followed appeals from several parties that encountered difficulties uploading candidate particulars to the commission’s electronic portal. The decision has triggered competing reactions, with some parties welcoming the additional time while civil society groups warned that repeated changes to electoral timelines could weaken public confidence.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) seized on the extension to highlight what it described as its superior organisational preparedness, saying it had submitted all its candidates ahead of the original deadline. APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda argued that political parties should be judged not only by campaign promises but also by their ability to plan, coordinate, comply with rules and meet statutory deadlines.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress welcomed the extension, while the African Democratic Congress offered no substantive comment on the decision.
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre and Transition Monitoring Group cautioned that electoral deadlines serve as safeguards for predictability, fairness and a level playing field. Their executive director and chairman, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, said any adjustment must have a clear legal and administrative justification and apply equally to all affected parties.
As preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, the debate over INEC's deadline underscores the broader challenge of balancing administrative flexibility with electoral certainty and public trust.
