Zambia's Opposition War: Makebi Zulu's Rise Sparks PF Power Struggle & Legal Drama

Copperbelt youth activist Ian Sinkala has publicly endorsed Makebi Zulu as the next President of the Patriotic Front (PF) and a potential Republican President of Zambia, urging all PF members and well-meaning Zambians to rally behind him. Sinkala highlighted Mr. Zulu's exceptional leadership qualities, integrity, and unwavering commitment to national development, deeming these traits essential for guiding the country forward. He described Mr. Zulu as representing a new generation of leadership: visionary, principled, and dedicated to national progress, possessing the capacity, intellect, and passion required to unite the Patriotic Front and provide meaningful solutions to Zambia's myriad challenges. Sinkala called upon PF members to transcend their differences and focus on rebuilding the party under strong, credible, youthful, energetic, and forward-looking leadership, which he believes Mr. Zulu embodies to regain public confidence and effectively serve the people.
In line with his broader consultative efforts, Makebi Zulu, a prominent lawyer and PF presidential contender, recently engaged in a significant meeting with Constitutional Lawyer and State Counsel John Sangwa SC. Mr. Zulu commended Mr. Sangwa’s initiative to reawaken civic consciousness at a time when many citizens feel marginalized and disenchanted. Their deliberations underscored a growing national sentiment for a renewed trajectory for Zambia, firmly rooted in the rule of law, economic revitalization, and a government genuinely committed to serving its people, particularly as the nation looks towards the 2026 general elections. The discussions took particular interest in understanding Mr. Sangwa’s movement’s vision and motivations. This widespread call for renewed leadership and accountability comes amidst heightened national debate over the state of justice and political freedoms in Zambia, following recent convictions of political figures such as Hon. Nakacinda, Hon. Munir Zulu, and Hon. Maureen Mabonga on charges of seditious practices.
Mr. Zulu revealed that his team has received overwhelming appeals from citizens across the country urging them to consider offering themselves for higher leadership in 2026. In response, he has embarked on an extensive, broad-based consultation process involving stakeholders, opinion leaders, civil society representatives, and ordinary citizens. He emphasized that this undertaking is not driven by personal ambition but by a sincere commitment to listen, understand prevailing concerns, and explore collective avenues to restore hope and dignity to the nation. Mr. Zulu reiterated the need for a unity of purpose among all committed to justice, fairness, and economic empowerment, whether through political parties, civic movements, or citizen-led initiatives. He assured Zambians that his team is actively listening, guided by the principle that leadership must be rooted in service, not self-interest; in listening, not imposition; and in the restoration of public confidence in institutions, not their erosion, aiming to forge a new path towards prosperity, integrity, and enduring hope.
The recent gathering at the PF Secretariat for Makebi Zulu dramatically energized the party’s succession narrative. A notable element is the strong backing from the eastern wing, where many assert Mr. Zulu’s unwavering loyalty to former President Edgar Lungu during times when others faltered, fostering perceptions of quiet approval from the Lungu household. The significant turnout at the event, predominantly composed of young supporters chanting slogans and singing solidarity songs, raised questions about the origins of such robust mobilization without explicit structural backing, indicating a shift in the PF leadership race dynamics. Mrs. Phiri, speaking at the event, urged Mr. Zulu to maintain steadfast leadership and uphold the values of discipline and respect throughout his campaign. She explicitly stated,
