Zambia mourns the passing of a distinguished spiritual leader, Emeritus Archbishop Telesphore George Mpundu of Lusaka, who, at 78, had become a significant moral voice following the deaths of other prominent clergy such as Cardinal Medardo Joseph Mazombwe, Bishop Paul Francis Duffy, and Bishop Dennis Harold De Jong. Archbishop Mpundu was widely recognized as a dignified and consistent advocate for justice, deeply committed to addressing human suffering caused by political actions within the country.

Throughout his extensive public life, Archbishop Mpundu consistently leveraged his voice and the strength of his arguments to speak out against a myriad of societal ills. He fearlessly condemned human rights violations, rampant corruption in government, attacks on democratic principles, intentional political polarization, and the alarming indifference of the country’s political leadership to the plight of its citizens. His conviction stemmed from an intrinsic understanding that remaining silent in the face of such human-made injustices equated to actively sustaining a detrimental status quo.

Despite facing considerable pressure and criticism from those in power who found his outspokenness on public interest issues unbearable, the courageous man of God steadfastly refused to be silenced. He resisted the familiar tactic employed by successive governing parties, which often involved accusing government critics, regardless of their good intentions, of being opposition supporters. Archbishop Mpundu stood as a highly principled and courageous individual, serving as an inspiring paradigm for the kind of clergy Zambia, and indeed Africa, profoundly needs: leaders imbued with a profound sense of responsibility and an unyielding conscience restless in the face of injustice, poor governance, human rights abuses, and the pervasive degrading poverty.

The Catholic Church in Zambia, the Archdiocese of Lusaka, and Catholic faithful across the nation extend their heartfelt condolences, reflecting on Archbishop Emeritus Mpundu's impactful legacy. President Hakainde Hichilema of the Republic of Zambia also offered his condolences, stating that Archbishop Emeritus Mpundu will be remembered for his distinguished spiritual leadership, profound humility, and unwavering commitment to dialogue, peace, justice, and national unity. Archbishop Mpundu, in every sense, fought a good fight, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and advocacy. May the Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest.
