Zambia Erupts: Bill No. 7 Sparks Protests and Government Dismisses 'Fake' MP List!

Mr. Kasonde, alongside party Spokesperson Suzyo Mbale and Trustee Ednah Ngoma, was detained last Friday after protesting against Bill 7 at the Parliament in Lusaka. The trio was subsequently released from Police custody on Sunday afternoon, having been charged with conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Speaking after their release, Mr. Kasonde informed Radio Icengelo News that they had been held at Lusaka Central Police and paid an admission of guilt for the charge. He expressed concern, noting that the arrest occurred despite the same Police having granted them a permit to protest. Mr. Kasonde emphatically vowed to continue opposing Bill 7, which the Government recently reintroduced to Parliament.

In a related Facebook post, Mr. Kasonde further criticized the government, stating, “Thank you all that stood with us during our 3 days incarceration at Lusaka Central Police Station by this shameless Ruthless UPND regime and hypocritical leader who lies with a straight face that he respects the law when infact not.” He reiterated that they had a permit but were arrested by the very police sent by the authorities, concluding, “We did no wrong. We won’t give up. We forgive but won’t forget. Zambia remains a democracy and our rights will be respected at all cost. Evil bill 7 must fall. Wherever we want to go our feet will take us.”

Meanwhile, addressing a press briefing in Lusaka, Mr. Mweetwa described any circulating list related to the bill as political propaganda. He underscored the constitutional right of Members of Parliament to vote freely on Bill 7. Mr. Mweetwa clarified that Bill No. 7 has generated diverse viewpoints following an extensive consultation process, reassuring citizens that the legislation would not be imposed upon them.

Furthermore, Mr. Mweetwa highlighted that the proposed amendments within Bill 7 are specifically designed to enhance the representation of women, young people, and persons living with disabilities in Parliament. This, he explained, aims to strengthen inclusivity within Zambia’s democratic framework.
