Zambia Election Shocker: ECZ Blocks Tasila Lungu's Chawama By-election Bid

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), through its Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro, has issued critical information regarding the upcoming Chawama Parliamentary By-election. Nominations for the by-election are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 16th December, 2025, at Chawama Primary School, which has been designated as the official nomination centre.

A significant directive from the ECZ addresses the procedure for submitting nomination papers. The Commission noted with concern that some aspiring candidates in upcoming by-elections had indicated intentions to lodge their nomination papers electronically. The ECZ has unequivocally clarified that there is no provision under Article 52 of the Constitution of Zambia for the electronic submission of nomination papers. Therefore, all aspiring candidates and political parties are advised that nomination papers must be submitted physically at the designated Nomination Centre on the prescribed nomination date and within the stipulated time. The ECZ urges strict compliance with all nomination requirements to prevent disqualification.

The Chawama parliamentary seat became vacant following a pronouncement by the Speaker of the National Assembly on 28th November, 2025, in accordance with Article 72(2)(c) of the Constitution. The ECZ further emphasized the provisions of Article 72(4) of the Constitution of Zambia, which states that
