Director Zack Snyder, the de facto architect of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), helmed three films before his time with the franchise concluded. While his departure from the production of Justice League was publicly attributed to a personal tragedy, Snyder has since hinted at a more complex and potentially "sinister" reason behind his firing, suggesting significant tension and interference from Warner Bros. during his tenure.

Following Snyder's exit, Warner Bros. controversially hired Joss Whedon to rewrite and oversee extensive reshoots for Justice League. This altered version of the film subsequently underperformed at the box office and faced widespread criticism for its inconsistent tone. Snyder has maintained that he has never watched the theatrical cut, honoring a wish from his wife.

The filmmaker recounted the immense difficulty of the months following the personal tragedy – the loss of his daughter while working on the 2017 release – a period further complicated by the additional blow of being removed from Justice League. However, years later, a massive wave of fan support ultimately allowed Snyder to fulfill and release his original vision for the movie, known as Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Snyder acknowledged the studio's perspective, stating, "They had this massive IP that’s worth a ton and I can understand wanting to protect it as best they could since all their jobs depended on it working." He further suggested a "horrible" thought process within the studio, implying they viewed his personal tragedy as an opportunity to "take the movie back now."

His three DCEU movies—Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder's Justice League—received a mixed critical response but collectively grossed approximately $2 billion worldwide. Snyder recently premiered his passion project, The Last Photograph, at the Toronto International Film Festival, following a period of creating films for Netflix.
