Young workers urged to use HMRC App for smooth summer employment - Leeds Live
Young people are encouraged to install a complimentary application from HM Revenue and Customs to prevent complications with their summer employment. In excess of 1.2 million Brits under the age of 25 have already installed the HMRC application, which offers immediate access to vital details such as National Insurance numbers, tax codes, and information from previous employers.
These particulars are necessary when submitting applications for seasonal employment. This recommendation coincides with the conclusion of examinations for numerous school leavers, college attendees, and university graduates seeking additional income.
Between May and August of the preceding year, a mean average of 40,000 additional young people commenced employment each month in comparison to the remainder of the year.
As employment opportunities in the hospitality, retail, leisure, and agricultural sectors are anticipated to surge this summer, authorities assert that the application enables young job seekers to gain an advantage.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Chief Customer Officer, stated: "Earning extra cash is important when young people have down time from studying."
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, said: “Earning extra cash is important when young people have down time from studying. Downloading the HMRC app is a simple way to ensure they can apply for their job quickly and get on with earning extra cash.”
The app provides immediate access to employment history, tax details, and the vital National Insurance number — the most commonly misplaced bit of information by young people starting work. More than 146,000 people contacted the National Insurance helpline in the year to April saying they’d lost or forgotten it.
Ms Lloyd said: “It’s quicker and easier for people to access their NI number via the HMRC app. They can download it to keep it safely in their phone’s digital wallet to use whenever it’s needed.”
Nearly 90,000 under-25s took advantage of the system last year to obtain their NI numbers straight from the app. The tax authority is urging young people to guard their NI numbers vigilantly and share them only with reliable entities like employers to avoid falling prey to identity theft.
In other advice, newly employed people are encouraged to examine their pay statements regularly to confirm they're being paid as per National Minimum Wage regulations. Should anyone suspect they are not receiving the correct wages, they can report their suspicions to HMRC or seek assistance from ACAS, the employment conciliation service.
The HMRC application is a hit among the younger workforce, with high reviews such as 4.8 stars in the Apple App Store and 4.6 stars in Google Play. After completing registration, users can sign into the app securely with face ID, fingerprint recognition, or by entering a six-digit PIN. For those yet to create a Government Gateway ID, proof of identity might be necessary using documents like a passport or driving licence.
The current National Minimum Wage hourly rates (as of April 1, 2025) are:
Age 21 and over (National Living Wage): £12.21
Age 18 to 20: £10.00
Under 18: £7.55
