Young engineers donate water facility to Oko-Oba community in lagos
To sustain youth empowerment, and public health, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), YEA Nigeria Chapter, has completed the EmpowerFlow Project, a solar-powered water infrastructure initiative that delivers 30,000 litres of clean water daily to the Oko-Oba Abattoir community in Lagos.
Designed and led by young Nigerian engineers, it was part of the ASHRAE Global Decarbonisation Challenge. The project not only supplies critical water resources to a facility that supports over 30% of Lagos’s meat supply, but also operates with zero carbon emissions.
It also eliminating an estimated eight tonnes of Carbon dioxide (CO₂) yearly and saving over ₦4m in energy costs each year. Project Lead, Abraham Okoko, said: “EmpowerFlow shows that with the right support, young professionals can solve major infrastructure challenges using sustainable, homegrown solutions.” The project’s success was powered by a collaborative network of stakeholders, including: Rotary Club of Lagos; Akdas Ltd & Perabeam Ltd; Lagos State Government and YEA Nigeria & ASHRAE Society for funding and strategic guidance .
“EmpowerFlow also reflects ASHRAE’s commitment to workforce development and diversity. A mixed-gender engineering team received hands-on training in solar energy systems, site planning, and community engagement, reinforcing the organization’s long-term goals around sustainability and inclusive innovation.
“Despite challenges, including bureaucratic delays and an unexpected borehole collapse, the team adapted swiftly with transparent budgeting, strategic planning, and proactive stakeholder coordination.
As the project moves into its final phase, plans are underway to officially hand it over to the Lagos State
Government. The team is also focused on long-term capacity building to ensure the system’s continued operation. ”
