Yellowjackets Star Sophie Thatcher Teases Unique Horror Project

At the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, You Know Films' Alex Noyer hosted the team behind Neon's summer horror film, Her Private Hell, for interviews at the Fantastic Pavilion. This event brought together writer-director Nicolas Winding Refn and key cast members including Charles Melton, Sophie Thatcher, Havana Rose Liu, and Kristine Frøseth to discuss the inspirations, creative processes, and the unique journey of bringing the movie to life. This film marks Refn's anticipated return to feature filmmaking after a decade-long hiatus.
Nicolas Winding Refn, known for works like Drive and The Neon Demon, revealed that his decision to return to the director's chair was profoundly influenced by a brush with death. This experience reignited his creative spark, leading to Her Private Hell, which he describes as a collision of two distinct visions. Refn elaborated on the film's initial concept, how the script evolved significantly from page to screen, and his unique approach to guiding a younger ensemble cast, even keeping the ending a mystery to them throughout production to maintain narrative tension.
Charles Melton, who portrays Private K in the film, shared his motivations for joining the project, his initial reaction to the script, and his experience working with Refn. Melton spoke about adapting to Refn's distinctive direction style and the film's evolving production process, which instilled confidence in his ability to embody his character effectively. The discussions highlighted Refn's on-set 'rules' and his methods for managing the diverse cast.
The plot of Her Private Hell centers on Sophie Thatcher's character, Elle, who embarks on a search for her father after a mysterious fog descends upon their futuristic city. This fog unleashes a deadly presence, threatening the unsuspecting metropolis. The film features a strong supporting cast including Havana Rose Liu as Dominique, Kristine Frøseth as Hunter, Dougray Scott, and Diego Calva.
The film's stars—Thatcher, Liu, and Frøseth—offered deeper insights into their characters: Elle, Dom, and Hunter. They delved into what the concept of a 'private hell' signifies to each actor and how it manifests within their roles. The trio also discussed the mist's function as a crucial storytelling device and its varying impacts on their characters. They reflected on their collaboration with Refn, navigating the fluid and ever-evolving script, and the biggest surprises and personal lessons they learned during filming. The overarching philosophy driving the film was encapsulated by the phrase, 'Nothing Is Everything,' informing discussions on heartbreaking on-screen romances and an ending that underwent complete transformation during production. Ultimately, the film aims to deliver a profound emotional impact on audiences seeking escapism.
Her Private Hell is scheduled to open in theaters on July 24.
