Chinese automaker XPeng is making a substantial commitment to artificial intelligence, positioning it as the core of its future endeavors, encompassing both its vehicles and robotics. The company's vision, termed 'Physical AI for All', emphasizes AI's role in genuinely enhancing people's lives through tangible benefits, moving beyond simple applications like large language models.

At the heart of XPeng's AI strategy are its proprietary in-house developed AI Turing chips. These advanced processors boast 40 cores and an impressive 750 Trillions of Operations Per Second (TOPS) of computing power, along with integrated foundation models. XPeng is leveraging these powerful chips to build exclusive power systems, hardware, and operating systems, which will bring its sophisticated AI capabilities into the physical realm.

A prime example of this integration is the upcoming 2026 XPeng L03 SUV, unveiled at a recent event in Munich, Germany, for the European, Australian, and Chinese markets. This vehicle, comparable in size to a Ford Mustang Mach-E, will be available in both all-electric and EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) powertrains. The Ultra versions of the L03 SUV will feature the latest iteration of XPeng's Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) system, powered by three AI Turing chips and its emerging VLA 2.0 semi-autonomous technology. This setup is designed to compete directly with supervised autonomous driving systems offered by other manufacturers.

XPeng's ambitions extend to fully autonomous driving. The company is actively working towards mapless driving capabilities, training its system to roll this out in the near future. Furthermore, XPeng commenced testing its first robotaxi in Guangzhou, China, earlier this year, utilizing the most advanced version of VLA, with the ultimate goal of achieving Level 4, fully autonomous driving across its entire vehicle fleet.

Recognizing the complexities of 'physical AI', XPeng has identified key challenges such as unstructured data, continuous signals, and real-world interactions. The vast amount of data collected from vehicle sensors necessitates the use of advanced models for efficient labeling, ensuring no information loss. Crucially, as XPeng plans to deploy NGP in Europe, it is meticulously training the system to recognize region-specific elements like cyclists, pedestrian scooters, and diverse road signs, which are more prevalent on European roads. This adaptation is vital, as driving habits vary significantly between markets, ensuring the semi-autonomous system is proficient in its native operating environment before public release.
