andBeyond Bateleur Camp, recently voted the No. 1 hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure readers, offers an intimate and luxurious safari experience in Kenya's iconic Masai Mara National Reserve. With only 18 tented suites and one deluxe family suite spread across two distinct locations, the camp maintains a low-key atmosphere, enhanced by a dedicated staff, many of whom have served for over a decade, fostering a strong sense of confidence and camaraderie.

Guest itineraries at Bateleur Camp are remarkably flexible and customized daily, allowing visitors to set their own safari schedules, a notable distinction from more rigid lodge programs. This personalized approach ensures every guest's preferences are met, whether it's an early morning game drive or a relaxed start to the day. The camp's commitment to local community engagement is evident, with 70% of the staff recruited from neighboring Masai villages. A resident Maasai cultural guide facilitates authentic experiences, including dance performances and children's activities, enriching the guests' understanding of the local culture.

The journey to Bateleur Camp itself often begins as a safari, with guides like Isaac Kimani meeting guests directly at Kichwa Tembo Airstrip. The camp's strategic location at the foot of the Oloololo escarpment provides breathtaking 180-degree views of the sprawling Masai Mara plains, visible from the main building and most guest tents. The camp’s all-Kenyan staff, including Grace Mwaisaka, chef “Magic” Jackson Mutuku, and Joel Kariuki, provide service that feels akin to staying in a welcoming home, with frequent use of Swahili phrases like “karibu sana” (you’re very welcome) and “hakuna matata” (no worries).

The 18 Luxury Tents, along with one Luxury Family Tent, are elegantly decorated in a classic campaign style, featuring trunks, leather furniture, and brass fixtures. Each tent boasts a canopied outdoor deck, perfect for observing passing wildlife. Inside, guests find large, luxurious bathrooms with Jack-and-Jill sinks, walled toilets, indoor showers, and roll-topped brass tubs, often prepared with bubbles by a butler. An outdoor shower, a writing desk, and a well-stocked bar area with local and international beverages complete the amenities, offering comfort and immersion in the natural surroundings.

Despite its intimate size, Bateleur Camp offers diverse and exceptional dining experiences. Chef “Magic” Jackson creates new lunch and dinner menus daily, personally checking in with guests to discuss their choices. The cuisine is consistently imaginative, fresh, and flavorful, ranging from chicken shawarma boards to fish tacos, steak, or duck confit. Children's preferences are happily accommodated with custom dishes like pizza or spaghetti. A memorable highlight is often a lamp-lit dinner prepared and served in a forest clearing, featuring spit-roasted lamb and local dishes. Simple pleasures, like pre-dawn tea and coffee delivered to the tent, are also cherished moments.
