African Football Frenzy: Kenya's CHAN 2024 Legacy and Madagascar's Epic Rise

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, concluded as a significant event, serving as a crucial test run for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. The tournament, delayed from January 2025 to August 2-30, delivered unforgettable drama, grit, and passion, culminating in a historic final between tournament newcomers Madagascar and seasoned champions Morocco. From the opening whistle in Dar es Salaam to the thrilling knockout matches in Kampala and Nairobi, CHAN 2024 showcased the best of local-based African football talent.
Madagascar secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Sudan in their semi-final match held in Dar es Salaam, booking their place in the CHAN final for the very first time. Despite a dominant start, the first half remained goalless. The match took a turn in the 79th minute when Fenohasina Razafimaro was sent off, reducing Madagascar to ten men. However, Sudan, making their third semi-final appearance, could not capitalize on the advantage, pushing the game into extra time. The decisive moment came in the 116th minute when substitute Toky Rakotondraibe scored a stunning goal, sending his team to the final. Madagascar coach Romuald Rakotondrabe attributed the victory to the team's unity and unwavering belief.
In the other semi-final, Morocco defeated defending champions Senegal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Kampala, earning their spot in a third CHAN final. Senegal initially took the lead with Joseph Layousse's header from a corner, but Morocco quickly equalized seven minutes later through a powerful strike from Sabir Bougrine, his second goal of the tournament. The deadlock persisted through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout. Morocco displayed flawless execution, converting all five penalties, while Senegal’s captain Seyni N’Diaye missed his opening shot, sealing their fate. Morocco coach Tarik Sektioui praised his players' composure in critical moments.
Morocco's journey to the final was marked by their experience and composure. As seasoned contenders, the Atlas Lions entered CHAN 2024 with high expectations, aiming for a record third CHAN crown. They showed their strength in the group stages with emphatic wins over DR Congo (3–1), Zambia (3–1), and Angola (2–0), with their only stumble being a 0–1 loss to hosts Kenya. In the knockout rounds, their experience shone through with a tense 1–0 quarterfinal win over Tanzania, followed by the nerve-wracking penalty shootout victory against Senegal. Led by Mohamed Rabie Hrimat and Youssef Mehri, Morocco demonstrated discipline, depth, and a proven winning mentality.
Madagascar's path to the final, in contrast, was a fairy tale run. Arriving with little fanfare, the Barea defied expectations throughout the tournament. Group stage wins against Central African Republic (2–0) and Burkina Faso (2–1) built their confidence. A turning point occurred in the quarterfinals against hosts Kenya, where they drew 1-1 before triumphing 4-3 in a penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Michel “Toldo” Ramandimbisoa emerging as a hero. The semi-final against Sudan further cemented their dream, with Toky Rakotondraibe's 116th-minute goal securing their historic first-ever CHAN final appearance. For the island nation, reaching this stage was already historic, but the dream of winning was alive.
The stage was set for the CHAN 2024 final on Saturday, August 30th, at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani in Nairobi, where Madagascar faced Morocco in a clash between tournament newcomers and seasoned champions. The final match was highly anticipated, posing a battle of
