World Oral Health Day launched in Accra

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

The event, which took place in Accra yesterday, was aimed at raising awareness about the critical role oral health plays in overall well-being.

It was on the theme: “A happy mouth is a happy mind,” which serves as a reminder that oral health is an integral part of general health, quality of life and productivity.”

There was also a free dental screening exercise to reinforce the importance of regular check-ups to prevent oral health issues.

Also, Colgate-Palmolive distributed toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste to attendees.

The Director-General of GHS highlighted the findings of a 2023 World Health Organisation survey on oral health in Ghana, which revealed a high prevalence of oral diseases.

He said over 70 per cent of those surveyed were adults who reported signs of gum diseases, such as bleeding, pain, or swelling, while tooth decay remained one of the most common conditions across all ages.

Additionally, the survey found out that less than 10 per cent of Ghanaians visit a dentist regularly, with most seeking care only when experiencing pain or severe complications.

Poor oral hygiene practices were also prevalent, with nearly 50 per cent of respondents not using fluoride toothpaste and many reporting infrequent brushing habits.

Prof Akoriyea said that the GHS was, therefore, taking steps to expand access to dental care, including deploying more dental professionals to underserved regions and revamping the “Onyodo” mobile dental clinics to extend services to rural areas.

He said while most dentists were concentrated in urban areas, efforts were being made to deploy them to other regions and districts to ensure nationwide accessibility.

“We have two mobile clinics dedicated to dental issues, but unfortunately, they have not been in use for years.

“Many people in rural areas lack knowledge about oral hygiene, and we are determined to bridge this gap,” he said.
