Oluwo Accuses Ooni of Ife of Plotting His Downfall

The simmering tensions between two prominent Yoruba monarchs have once again erupted into public view, with the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, leveling serious accusations against the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. Oba Akanbi has publicly accused Oba Ogunwusi of orchestrating his downfall, alleging that the Ooni is actively working to undermine his position and even plotted his suspension from the Osun State Council of Obas. These are weighty claims that strike at the heart of traditional authority and inter-Oba relations in Yorubaland.

At the center of the dispute is the Oluwo's assertion that he played a crucial role in Oba Ogunwusi's ascension to the throne of Ooni of Ife in 2015. According to Oba Akanbi, he intervened in a court case that threatened to derail Oba Ogunwusi's candidacy. He claims that at the request of Prince Adeyeye Ogunwusi, now the Ooni, he used his influence to resolve the legal challenge, paving the way for Oba Ogunwusi to be crowned as the Ooni of Ife. The Oluwo stated that he was contacted by Akin Daodu, an ally of the then Prince Ogunwusi, who sought his assistance in resolving the court case. Oba Akanbi claims he made a call that led to the resolution of the case just before Oba Ogunwusi's coronation.

However, the Oluwo alleges that instead of gratitude, he has faced antagonism from the Ooni since the latter assumed the throne. He specifically accuses Oba Ogunwusi of being the mastermind behind his suspension from the Osun State Council of Obas, a move that significantly curtailed his influence and standing within the traditional hierarchy of the state. Oba Akanbi further claims that the Ooni is using some kings in Iwoland to destabilize his territory and that the Ooni was part of those who used his former wife against him. He also accused the Ooni of attacking him for discouraging idol worship.

In response to these allegations, the Ooni of Ife, through his Director of Media, Moses Olafare, has dismissed the Oluwo's claims. Olafare stated that this is not the first time Oba Akanbi has made such comments and that the Ooni's palace would not be dignifying the allegations with a response. He added that the Ooni is focused on developmental projects and does not have time to respond to someone looking for attention. This stance suggests a desire to avoid escalating the conflict and maintain a sense of decorum befitting the Ooni's position.

The accusations and counter-accusations have raised eyebrows across Yorubaland, with many observers expressing concern about the implications for the unity and stability of the region's traditional institutions. The Ooni of Ife holds a paramount position among Yoruba Obas, and any public dispute involving him is bound to attract significant attention and scrutiny. The situation is further complicated by the Oluwo's outspoken and often controversial style, which has made him a polarizing figure in some quarters. His assertion of playing a key role in the Ooni's ascension, followed by accusations of betrayal, adds a dramatic layer to the narrative.

The timing of the Oluwo's allegations is also noteworthy, coinciding with a period of heightened political and social tensions in Nigeria. As the country grapples with various challenges, including security concerns and economic uncertainties, the need for strong and united traditional leadership is more pressing than ever. Any perception of division or discord among traditional rulers could undermine their ability to effectively mediate conflicts, promote social cohesion, and provide guidance to their communities.

The accusations leveled by the Oluwo and the Ooni's response highlight the complex dynamics of power, influence, and rivalry that can exist within traditional institutions. While the Ooni's palace has opted to downplay the allegations, the fact remains that the Oluwo's words carry weight and resonate with many people in Iwoland and beyond. It remains to be seen how this saga will unfold and what impact it will have on the relationship between these two prominent Obas and the broader Yoruba community.

Adding another layer to the Oluwo's recent pronouncements, he has also publicly defended the rights of Muslims in the southwest to adopt Sharia law. This stance, made in response to mixed reactions over the planned inauguration of a Sharia Court in Oyo state, further underscores the Oluwo's willingness to engage in contentious issues and assert his views on matters of public importance. The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, Oyo state chapter, had announced that a Sharia court would be inaugurated in Oyo town and surrounding areas in January 2025. Oba Akanbi’s support for this initiative aligns with his broader advocacy for the rights and interests of Muslims in Yorubaland.
