Nigerian Airports to Close for Upgrades

The Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA) in Ibadan is temporarily closed to facilitate extensive upgrade works aimed at transforming it into an international airport. This initiative, jointly carried out by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Oyo State Government, has received the approval of the Federal Government.

FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, confirmed the closure, stating that the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has suspended airport operations in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations. The upgrade aligns with the Oyo State Government’s strategic plan to elevate Ibadan Airport to international standards.

The comprehensive improvements and remodeling works are currently underway, necessitating the closure to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel. FAAN has appealed to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this period.

According to reports, the Oyo State Government has expressed a strong interest in upgrading the airport to meet international standards and has committed resources to support the upgrade works. The closure is expected to last for six months, during which the airport will undergo significant enhancements to meet global standards and accommodate international flights.

The planned upgrades include improvements to infrastructure and operational standards. FAAN emphasized that the closure is essential for executing critical improvements at the airport, ensuring compliance with aviation safety recommendations and best practices.

In a statement, FAAN highlighted that the upgrades are part of the Oyo State Government’s initiative to transform Ibadan Airport into an international hub, enhancing the passenger experience. The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all airport users and personnel during the upgrade process.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has indicated that the upgrade work will last for at least six months. This project follows President Bola Tinubu's approval in June 2024 to upgrade Ibadan Domestic Airport to an international airport.

In a related development, the Abia State Government has commenced the construction of its airport, with Governor Alex Otti targeting completion within 24 months, despite a 36-month contractual agreement with the contractor. The new airport will be located in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government area of the state.
