Ibadan airport temporarily closed for upgrade, says FAAN | TheCable

In a statement on Saturday, Obiageli Orah, director of public affairs and consumer protection at FAAN, said the federal government approved the airport‘s temporary closure due to ongoing works.

Orah said following the approval, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has shut down the runway and the airport in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations.

“As part of the Oyo state government’s initiative to upgrade Ibadan Airport from a domestic to an international airport, various improvements and remodeling works are currently underway,” the statement reads.

“In compliance with Aviation safety recommended standards and processes, the closure became imperative to ensure the safety of passengers as well as airport personnel.”

FAAN also appealed for understanding and cooperation from stakeholders and airport users during the closure period.

On June 27, 2024, Seyi Makinde, Oyo state governor, President Bola Tinubu approved the upgrade of Ibadan airport to international standard.

According to Makinde, the upgrade would include the construction of a new terminal, runway and other structural features.

On February 28, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) the possible closure of the airport for six months for maintenance and upgrades, with the closure expected to commence in March.
