President Mahama Inaugurates New Armed Forces Council, Calls for Action Against Galamsey

In a move aimed at fortifying the leadership and strategic direction of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated the newly reconstituted Armed Forces Council on Monday, March 24, 2025, at Jubilee House, Accra. The council, established under Article 211 of the 1992 Constitution, is pivotal in advising the President on critical military matters, including defence policy, military strategy, administration, and promotions.
President Mahama, during the swearing-in ceremony, emphasized the importance of the Armed Forces Council in maintaining peace, discipline, and integrity within the military. "This is not just a routine constitutional duty. It’s a reminder of our shared responsibility to preserve the peace, discipline, and integrity of the Armed Forces," he stated. He lauded the Armed Forces as the defenders of Ghana's sovereignty, protectors of its democracy, and a source of national pride.
The reconstituted Council is chaired by Vice President Professor Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. Other members include Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Mr Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Addo, Brigadier General (Rtd) Fuseni Idrisu, and Miss Nancy Dacwa Ampofo. Their collective expertise is expected to provide strategic direction to enhance national security and ensure effective military governance.
President Mahama expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Council members for their dedicated service and assured the newly appointed members of his government’s unwavering support. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in military infrastructure, logistics, and personnel welfare. The President also highlighted the importance of strengthening regional partnerships in peacekeeping and counter-terrorism efforts.
"The strength of our Armed Forces depends not only on the courage of those in uniform but on the quality of leadership and sound decisions guiding them," President Mahama noted, underscoring the critical role of the Armed Forces Council in shaping the military's future.
