The arrest and investigation of Chairman Wontumi have triggered a cacophony of reactions, with some quarters of the minority caucus in Parliament and its supporters vociferously claiming that the actions of the EOCO and the investigation itself constitute a blatant case of political vendetta.

However, this assertion is not only preposterous but also laughable, given the egregious nature of the allegations leveled against him.

It is intriguing that the NPP would seek to portray themselves as the sole custodians of the law, forgetting that the law is sacrosanct and applies equally to all individuals, irrespective of their background or political affiliation.The phrase "no person is above the law" seems to have been lost on them.

One is reminded of the allegations made by Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, former Environment, Science, and Technology Minister, who claimed that top government officials, including those at the Presidency during the Akufo-Addo administration, were involved in illegal mining, popularly known as 'galamsey'. The renowned professor alleged that the rot went as high as the government seat, Jubilee House, and that some of these individuals supervised his ousting from the Ministry to perpetuate the canker.

Prof. Frimpong Boateng further suggested that his efforts had prevented the forest reserves from further dissipation by these government officials, which is why there were reports of breaches after he left office. He even alleged that there was an orchestrated scheme within the party and government to get him out.

In stark contrast, when Chairman Wontumi was accused of engaging in illegality, the Akufo-Addo administration shielded him, declaring that Akonta Mining had not breached the laws. However, the facts of the current case are different. Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for various serious offenses, including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering. The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) is working assiduously with international law enforcement partners to unravel the truth behind these allegations.

It is imperative to note that the law is equal and applies to all, and if Chairman Wontumi is found guilty, he must face the full weight of the law. The double standard being exhibited by some quarters is not only unbecoming but also an affront to the rule of law. The investigation must be allowed to run its course, and justice must be served without fear or favor.
