Wolverine Returns? Hugh Jackman Finally Addresses 'Avengers: Doomsday' Role

The highly anticipated Marvel film, "Avengers: Doomsday," is generating significant buzz, particularly around the potential involvement of X-Men veteran Hugh Jackman. Despite his previous statements about retiring the claws after 2017's "Logan," Jackman recently hinted at a possible appearance, reigniting excitement among fans. His unexpected return as Wolverine in "Deadpool & Wolverine" last year paved the way for speculation that the iconic mutant might join Earth's Mightiest Heroes for another epic confrontation.
During a recent appearance on "The Graham Norton Show," Jackman was directly questioned about his role in "Avengers: Doomsday." While he refrained from giving a definitive "yes," he notably did not dismiss the idea, alluding to his long-standing portrayal of Wolverine since the year 2000. Joking about the possibility of Marvel utilizing technology if he couldn't physically participate, Jackman remarked, "Maybe. I'm never saying 'never' ever again […] I have done ten films now, so I think they have enough for an AI version of me." This statement underscores his decade-spanning commitment to the character, which began with the 2000 "X-Men" film and includes ten total reprises, culminating most recently in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Initially, Jackman had intended to conclude his tenure as Wolverine after "Logan" and even declined an appearance in the first "Deadpool" movie. However, a change of heart after seeing the 2016 film led to his official MCU debut in 2024.
"Avengers: Doomsday" is set to feature an extensive and star-studded ensemble cast, drawing from various eras of Marvel storytelling. The confirmed roster includes a mix of actors from the Infinity Saga, Phases 4 to 6, and even pre-Marvel Studios productions. Notable names expected to appear are Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Kelsey Grammer, David Harbour, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen. Furthermore, the film is expected to introduce the Fantastic Four, with Vanessa Kirby confirmed as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing.
While certain Marvel stalwarts like Jeremy Renner, Tom Holland, and Brie Larson, who have been part of previous Marvel projects, have yet to be officially confirmed for "Doomsday," their potential involvement remains a subject of discussion. Conversely, Elizabeth Olsen and Scarlett Johansson have explicitly stated they will not be appearing in the film. Adding another layer of excitement, two of Marvel's most iconic actors, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, are confirmed to return to the MCU. Despite their characters' arcs seemingly concluding in "Avengers: Endgame," both will be portraying new roles in "Doomsday": Downey Jr. as the formidable Doctor Doom, and Evans in an as-yet-unnamed capacity.
The highly anticipated "Avengers: Doomsday" is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. The film is directed by the acclaimed duo Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, with a script penned by Stephen McFeely, Michael Waldron, Jack Kirby, and Stan Lee. Belonging to the Superhero, Adventure, Action, and Sci-Fi genres, the movie promises to be a monumental cinematic event, bringing together a vast array of beloved and new characters for an unforgettable adventure.
