Why I dumped Labour Party for ADC - Senator Kingibe - Daily Trust

Published 8 hours ago2 minute read

The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Ireti Kingibe, has announced her defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Recall that the ADC was recently adopted by leaders of the opposition coalition championed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other prominent politicians like former governors of Rivers and Kaduna States, Rotimi Amaechi and Nasir El-Rufai, among others, as the platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 poll.

Senator  Kingibe cited the crisis in the LP, which she said led to the emergence of factions, as reason for her defection. She described her action ahead of the 2027 general election as a deliberate and strategic political move.

The Labour Party is neck-deep in crisis with two factions led by Senator Nenadi Usman and Barrister Julius Abure, laying claim to the leadership of the party.

Even though the Supreme Court has ruled on the matter, the two factions still exist as the crisis continues to fester.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja at the weekend, Senator Kingibe said  even though she has joined ADC,  her formal reception into the party would be marked by fanfare. adding that “I’m now totally and completely committed to the ADC.”

She said, “As the senator representing the FCT, you don’t expect me to just take a lunch break and go collect a card. I want to do so with noise and fanfare.”
