Who Ya Gonna Stream? Netflix Confirms Ghostbusters Return in 2027!

Netflix has officially announced the title of its new animated Ghostbusters series: Ghostbusters: Night Shift. The revelation came on "Ghostbusters Day," June 8, 2024, marking the anniversary of the original film's release in 1984. Showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan, alongside executive producers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, unveiled the title and a unique underground zine-style logo during a ceremony at the iconic Hook & Ladder 8 firehouse in New York City, a location central to the live-action Ghostbusters films. Details regarding which cinematic Ghostbusters team, if any, the series will follow remain undisclosed, with all further information currently held in a "Containment Unit."

Being a Ghostbuster, with its snazzy jumpsuits and fame, comes with the unique challenge of working unconventional hours, a concept Netflix aims to convey with the "Night Shift" title. The series adds to a rich animated legacy for the franchise. "The Real Ghostbusters," an animated series that expanded on the events of the first film, was a massive success in the 1980s, running for six seasons and spawning a popular toyline. It cleverly explained any cinematic discrepancies by portraying the movie as an in-universe picture about the real Ghostbusters. This series was later revived in 1997 as "Extreme Ghostbusters," featuring an older Egon Spengler leading a new team of college-aged Ghostbusters.

The upcoming "Ghostbusters: Night Shift" is set to premiere on Netflix in 2027, three years after the franchise's most recent big-screen adventure, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire." Beyond this new animated series, the Ghostbusters universe continues to expand, with reports indicating a live-action film sequel and an animated feature are also in development, solidifying the franchise's enduring presence in popular culture.
