Bernhard was a frequent and memorable guest on Late Night with David Letterman and often collaborated professionally with her close friend and fellow Michigander, Madonna. Openly bisexual, she made television history with her recurring role as Nancy on "Roseanne," portraying one of the first bisexual characters on American network television.

Her diverse filmography also includes roles in "Hudson Hawk," "Babes," and the recent 2023 A24 hit "Marty Supreme."
