Wayanad landslide: Rajamma’s mortal remains shifted to a single grave

Kozhikode: The mortal remains of Wayanad landslide victim Rajamma, which was earlier buried in two separate graves, were reinterred in a single grave on Friday.For several months, Rajamma's son Anil had been pleading with district authorities to shift the remains to a single grave.

The authorities expedited the process after Anil went public and expressed his anguish over the delay.Following this, Wayanad district collector D R Meghashree intervened and issued an order on Thursday to shift the remains to a single grave.Rajamma's remains had been buried in the graves marked N-34 and N-213. They were exhumed from N-213 grave and it was re-buried in N-34 grave.Vythiri tahsildar and Meppadi panchayat officials were present along with family members during the exhumation and reburial.Rajamma's body parts were recovered from Nilambur four days after the July 30, 2024, Chooralmala-Mundakkai landslides. As the body could not be identified initially, the remains were interred at Puthumala mass grave for landslide victims in Aug 2024. DNA examination of the samples conducted later revealed that the body parts were buried separately in two graves.Besides Rajamma, the Wayanad landslide tragedy had claimed the lives of three children of Anil's brother Aneesh and his sister Parvathy's son.
