Ukraine has recently endured a series of devastating, large-scale aerial assaults from Russia, targeting numerous regions across the country, while simultaneously engaging in its own counter-strikes against Russian infrastructure. However, a direct missile hit caused a loud explosion, waking people across the city. The impact ripped through the middle of the residential building, leading to the total collapse of five floors and leaving smouldering rubble in its wake. Rescue workers sifted through the debris, with stretchers bearing body bags emerging periodically.

The aftermath revealed profound human suffering. Iryna Kutsenko desperately tried to contact her mother, Liubov, who had opted to shelter in her corridor due to slower mobility, lamenting the cruelty of attacks designed to strike while people sleep. Oksana Rumpik, 54, and her husband Mykhailo, who survived the direct impact, struggled to articulate their horror, with Oksana stating, "People are dying, simple people are dying. So many are dying, you just cannot imagine." The death toll in Kyiv from this particular strike tragically climbed to at least 21 individuals, including four children. Ukraine's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, condemned the incident as a "pure example of a terrorism attack," characterizing it as Russia's response to Ukraine's peace proposals and efforts.

Beyond Kyiv, Russia launched a massive overnight attack on at least 14 regions of Ukraine, according to authorities. In the southern Zaporizhzhia region, one woman was killed and 30 people, including children, were injured, with emergency services battling fires. The south-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region also faced multiple strikes on infrastructure facilities. In its regional capital, Dnipro, a residential house was completely destroyed and a shopping centre sustained damage. While no initial casualties were reported there, four people were later injured in a subsequent drone attack, marking the second consecutive night Dnipropetrovsk had been targeted. Railway infrastructure near the capital, Kyiv, was also damaged, though central and south-eastern Ukraine bore the brunt of these widespread strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia launched nearly 540 drones and 45 missiles in these recent barrages, urging the international community to impose tough new sanctions on Moscow. Russia's defence ministry, in turn, claimed all "targets of the strike have been achieved" and "designated objects have been hit," assertions that remain unverified. Meanwhile, Ukraine's military retaliated by targeting Russian oil refineries. Its drones successfully struck facilities in Krasnodar and Syzran in Russia overnight, leading to "numerous" explosions and fires at the Krasnodar facility, which Kyiv states produces three million tons of petroleum products annually. Russian authorities in Krasnodar confirmed the drone strikes, acknowledging damage to a process unit and a fire.

The broader geopolitical context for these intensified attacks includes ongoing international diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a peace deal. President Zelensky has explicitly rejected proposals for a buffer zone to end the conflict and has called for robust action from the US, Europe, and the rest of the world, emphasizing that Russia's actions demonstrate a "disregard for words." European foreign affairs ministers, convening in Denmark, discussed international developments, with a key agenda item being the potential freezing of approximately €210 billion worth of Russian assets. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas asserted that "Russia does not want peace," and France indicated it would table new proposals for sanctions to deplete Russia's war resources. Russian officials, on their part, claimed to have shot down 20 Ukrainian drones, including 18 over Crimea, and stated their forces were continuing a "non-stop offensive along almost the entire line of contact," even claiming the capture of Komyshevakha in the Donetsk region, though Ukraine has not confirmed this.
