The accident occurred at a busy intersection in the coastal city as NTV cameras broadcast a live feed during Saba Saba Day coverage.

The footage showed the matatu slowly crossing the junction in line with traffic lights when, in a flash, a speeding motorcycle darted into the road and rammed into the vehicle.

Gasps were heard from both onlookers and those in the TV studio as the motorcycle and its two occupants fell in front of the matatu.

Miraculously, both the rider and his passenger survived the crash, thanks to the driver's quick thinking as he slammed on the brakes in time.

The slow speed of the matatu was likely what saved their lives, though the two were left with visible injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Kenyans on social media condemned the boda boda rider for endangering his passenger's life by failing to obey traffic lights.

Frank Komu

"Whoever lied to riders that no other motorist should be ahead of them made a big mistake. Their brakes are only useful for their convenience, but not for giving way."

Jenner Elsie:

"Watu wa nduthi wanatokaga from nowhere unaonaga tu wamekucross."

Mimmo Wa Pishori

"Tuwachane na makosa hapa juu hakuna mtu hana haraka asubuhi ya leo asipatwe kwa corner mbaya. Wako safe kweli? Especially pillion, nikama amegongwa kichwa vibaya."

This comes a day after a devastating road crash near Kavingaci, Embu County, killed a boda boda rider, his pillion, and left others injured.

The tragic accident involved a black SUV owned by a former deputy governor, who is the current NSSF chair, David Kariuki.

Eyewitnesses shared that the ill-fated car veered off the road before plunging into the nearby Kapingazi River.

In the wake of the accident, false reports emerged online claiming that the vehicle involved was part of President William Ruto's motorcade.

Meanwhile, the government has heightened security across major towns as Kenyans mark the 35th Saba Saba Day.

Roadblocks on major roads caused widespread disruption in Nairobi and beyond, forcing residents to seek alternative ways to get to their workplaces.

Despite earlier police assurances to safeguard peaceful demonstrations, a heavy deployment of security personnel brought several towns to a standstill.

The most affected were passengers in long-distance buses after they were instructed to park outside Kabete Police Station, unable to proceed due to the blockade.
