Victoria Beckham's 'True Feelings' Exposed: Mask Slips Amidst Brooklyn Feud
Victoria Beckham has unveiled a profound "dark, dark time" in her life, revealing in her new Netflix docuseries how she almost lost everything while battling to salvage her struggling fashion empire. A PR expert suggests this documentary, reportedly consulted with King Charles, marks a significant 'turning point' for the star, signifying her choice to embrace authenticity and let her carefully curated mask slip.
The former Spice Girl recounted arriving at work in tears, overwhelmed by the immense pressure of building her style brand amidst mounting debts. In the three-part series, simply titled "Victoria Beckham," she confesses, "I almost lost everything. I used to cry before I went to work every day because I just felt like a firefighter." She described the financial distress as a "snowball that was going down the mountain," with her business millions of pounds in the red, leading her to feel like she was "breaking down myself."
Victoria, 51, disclosed that her husband, David, frequently had to intervene financially, allegedly infusing £30 million on one occasion, which created considerable strain on their marriage behind the scenes. She recalled, "Yes, I'm going home to my husband, but I'm going home to my business partner as well, and so I would talk to him about it... I hated it. I absolutely hated it." Sir David, 50, admitted his own anxiety, stating, "I was panicked by it, because I never saw anything coming back... This cannot continue." Despite these immense challenges, Victoria successfully reversed her company's fortunes; in August, it was revealed that Victoria Beckham Holdings expanded by 22% over the preceding 12 months. She proudly stated, "I was constantly told I wasn't good enough in my youth and as a young adult, so I'm proud of what I've achieved."
The documentary also delves into Victoria's past struggle with an eating disorder during the height of her Spice Girls fame. She candidly discussed how a lack of control over her professional life led to damaging choices concerning food. "I could control my weight and I was controlling it in an incredibly unhealthy way," she confessed, admitting she was never honest with her parents about it and never discussed it publicly.
According to talent agent and PR specialist Dermot McNamara, the documentary reveals a "very different side to Victoria." He observed, "She's finally letting the mask slip a little and has opened up about struggles she's faced behind the polished facade. For years, she's been seen as this unshakable, picture-perfect woman, but what comes across this time is how much she's had to fight to keep everything together." McNamara highlighted how refreshing it is to see her honest about the sacrifices made to reinvent herself from pop star to designer.
Victoria further revealed that falling for David and having children—Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14—was not initially part of her life plan. "I was never the young girl growing up that dreamt of getting married and dreamt of being a mum. It wasn't until I met David that those things even occurred to me," she shared about her relationship with the former Manchester United icon, whom she started dating in 1997. For David, those powerful emotions were instantly mutual, as he confessed he "fell hard and fell quick" for her, stating, "When I met Victoria, I couldn't find one thing about her I didn't like, not one thing."
Dermot McNamara's commentary also emphasized David's unwavering support, noting that it "shines through it all." He observed, "The two of them seem stronger than ever after everything that's been said about their marriage over the years. They seem to be each other's anchors – she's finally allowing people to see that softer side of their relationship." While the show does not explicitly address alleged fallout with eldest son Brooklyn, he and his wife Nicola make a brief appearance at Victoria's Paris Fashion Week show. In contrast, daughter Harper is shown in a delightful moment, attempting to teach her mother how to dance.
The program also features several lighter moments, including Victoria humorously addressing her reputation as a "miserable cow that doesn't smile." She pointed the finger at David, explaining, "I've looked miserable for all these years, because when we stand on the red carpet, this guy [Becks] has always gone on the left. Now, I didn't realise that when I smile, which I do, I smile from the left – because if I smile from the right, I look unwell. So consequently I'm smiling on the inside, but no one ever sees it, so that's why it looks so moody."
Dermot concluded that the documentary "captures Victoria at a turning point," where, despite private heartache, she is "showing a side of herself that's more open than ever." He added, "Victoria has spent the past 30 years being increasingly guarded and it's refreshing to see her lean into that vulnerability. The message seems clear, she's done trying to prove herself, now she just wants to be real." Victoria herself described the process of making the Netflix documentary as "like a year's therapy," jokingly adding, "I feel that I went into this process calling myself a control freak and I've come out the other end a reformed control freak."
