USA Grapples with Largest Tuberculosis Outbreak in History

The United States is currently experiencing its largest tuberculosis (TB) outbreak in history, primarily concentrated in Kansas. This outbreak, which appears to have been ongoing since 2021, has seen a significant number of cases reported since 2024. A concerning aspect of this particular outbreak is that the circulating form of tuberculosis exhibits resistance to two common treatment methods. Further complicating matters, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government organizations are reportedly restricted from publicly discussing the outbreak due to a communications pause, as reported by The Washington Post.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has officially confirmed the outbreak, documenting 66 active cases of tuberculosis and 79 latent infections since 2024. Dr. Thomas Russo, a professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York, explains that
