US Renews Travel Restrictions on Zambian Citizens, Sparking Government Alert
Effective January 1, 2026, a US Presidential Proclamation restricts entry for Zambian nationals on immigrant and various non-immigrant visas, including those for business, tourism, and studies. Zambia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises citizens to consult the US Embassy for clarification and confirms ongoing diplomatic engagement.
A United States Presidential Proclamation, which took effect on January 1, 2026, has initiated significant restrictions on the entry of Zambian nationals into the US. This directive has led to the suspension of entry for individuals holding immigrant visas, as well as specific non-immigrant visa categories. These include B-1 (business), B-2 (tourism), B-1/B-2 (business/tourism combined), F (academic studies), M (vocational studies), and J (exchange visitor programs) visas.
Beyond these specific suspensions, the proclamation also stipulates reduced validity periods for other non-immigrant visas issued to Zambian nationals, to the extent permitted by US law. This comprehensive set of restrictions impacts a wide array of travel purposes for Zambian citizens intending to enter the United States.
However, the restrictions are not universal and are subject to several specified exceptions. These include US lawful permanent residents, dual nationals who are traveling on passports issued by countries not covered by the restrictions, and certain categories of official and diplomatic travelers. Additionally, the proclamation allows for other limited exceptions and case-by-case waivers, which may be applied under specific circumstances.
In response to these developments, Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has issued advisories to its citizens. The Ministry strongly urged Zambians planning to travel to the United States to familiarize themselves with the new requirements and to seek clarification from the US Embassy in Zambia regarding their individual circumstances. This clarification should be sought prior to making any travel arrangements or paying visa fees to avoid potential complications.
The Ministry has also assured the public that it is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, stating its commitment to continue engaging relevant US authorities through appropriate diplomatic channels in the interest of Zambian citizens. Furthermore, members of the public are encouraged to consult the official websites of the US Embassy in Zambia or the US Department of State for the most authoritative and up-to-date guidance on these travel restrictions.
