US Army Seals Massive $20B AI Deal with Anduril

The U.S. Army has formalized a significant 10-year contract with defense technology startup Anduril, a deal potentially valued at up to $20 billion. Announced late Friday, the agreement includes an initial five-year base period with an option for an additional five-year extension, encompassing Anduril’s hardware, software, infrastructure, and services. This enterprise contract is designed to consolidate over 120 previous separate procurement actions for Anduril’s commercial solutions, streamlining the acquisition process for the Army.
Gabe Chiulli, chief technology officer at the Department of Defense’s Office of the Chief Information Officer, emphasized the growing importance of software in modern warfare. “The modern battlefield is increasingly defined by software,” Chiulli stated, highlighting the necessity to acquire and deploy software capabilities with speed and efficiency to maintain military advantage. This strategic move by the U.S. Army underscores a broader initiative within the DoD to integrate advanced technological solutions rapidly.
Anduril was co-founded by Palmer Luckey, who gained prominence after selling his virtual reality startup Oculus to Facebook (now Meta). Luckey’s professional journey has included controversy following his departure from Facebook after reports of donations to a pro-Trump political group, which he insists misrepresented his views. Despite this, a recent feature in The New York Times indicated that Luckey and Anduril have found favor with the second Trump administration, driven by Luckey’s ambitious vision for transforming the U.S. military with autonomous fighter jets, drones, submarines, and other cutting-edge technologies. The company, named after a magical object from “The Lord of the Rings,” reportedly generated approximately $2 billion in revenue last year. Furthermore, separate reports suggest Anduril is currently engaged in discussions to raise new funding that could value the company at $60 billion.
This major contract announcement occurs amidst a dynamic landscape for AI and defense technology companies. The Department of Defense is presently involved in a legal dispute with AI firm Anthropic, which is suing the DoD over its designation as a supply chain threat following a failed contract negotiation. Concurrently, OpenAI has faced its own challenges, including consumer backlash and an executive departure, subsequent to signing a Pentagon deal. The U.S. Army’s substantial investment in Anduril reflects the ongoing push by the Department of Defense to leverage private sector innovation in rapidly evolving defense capabilities, particularly in software and autonomous systems.
