Urgent Safety Alert: Fake Labubu Dolls Pose Deadly Chemical & Choking Hazard to Children!

Parents across the UK are receiving urgent warnings regarding a concerning increase in dangerous, counterfeit Labubu dolls, often referred to as Lafufus. These fake toys, which have seen a surge in popularity, are not only poorly assembled but also present significant safety risks to children.Sutton Council's Trading Standardsteam, in particular, has highlighted the severity of the issue, reporting the seizure of over 230 suspected fake dolls in just one month during the summer.
This action underscores a broader problem, with hundreds of other counterfeit Labubu dolls, originally produced by Chinese toymaker Pop Mart, being reported and seized elsewhere in the country. The primary concern with these fake Labubu dolls stems from their shoddy construction. Authorities warn that small components such as hands, feet, and eyes can easily detach, posing severe choking hazards for young children.

Furthermore, poor stitching and inadequate stuffing within the dolls contribute to these choking risks. Beyond physical detachment, there's also a significant chemical safety concern: the fake toys are often manufactured using unverified materials that have not undergone testing to meet stringent UK safety standards. This means they could potentially contain harmful chemicals, endangering children who interact with them.
Genuine Labubu dolls, distinctive with their elf-like appearance, vinyl faces, plush bodies, pointy ears, big eyes, and mischievous grins displaying nine teeth, command prices ranging from £10 to £40, with rare editions fetching substantial sums, sometimes up to £172,000. Their high demand has made them increasingly difficult for British parents to purchase, as they frequently sell out in stores.
This scarcity, unfortunately, creates fertile ground for the proliferation of counterfeit versions, which often feature falsified markings on their packaging, deceptively leading consumers to believe they are authentic and safe. These fakes are typically sourced from unverified and untraceable origins. In response to these dangers, Sutton Council has issued crucial advice for parents and guardians. They strongly recommend purchasing Labubu dolls exclusively from reputable retailers and to exercise caution with unlicensed street sellers or unverified online sources.

A key indicator of authenticity for genuine Labubu dolls is the presence of a holograph sticker and a scannable QR code, which parents should always check for. If a dangerous toy is suspected or purchased, parents are advised to immediately prevent children from playing with it and to report it to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service at 0800 144 8848.
Businesses are also urged to take preventative measures. Trading Standards advises all Sutton businesses to conduct thorough due diligence, ensuring that stock is procured only from legitimate suppliers. It is critical for businesses to maintain full invoices and comprehensive traceability records for all products.
The council explicitly states that buying from unknown sellers should be avoided at all costs, reiterating that selling counterfeit or unsafe toys is a criminal offense. This is not an isolated incident; previous reports indicate that over 600 fake Lafufus were seized from two firms in Weston-super-Mare, highlighting a persistent challenge in ensuring toy safety.
