Unscripted Chaos & Mutant Mania: 'Avengers: Doomsday' Drops Major Bombshells!

The production of Avengers: Doomsday, set for release on May 1, 2026, has been characterized by a familiar Marvel Studios secrecy, with reports indicating that filming commenced even before a finished script was fully in place. This practice, while potentially raising concerns, echoes the production of critically and commercially successful films like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which were also famously shot under similar circumstances. Alan Cumming, who is set to reprise his role as Nightcrawler, confirmed the script's delayed arrival, stating, “Oh yeah, we eventually saw a script. It took a while. We had a script.”
Marvel's stringent anti-spoiler culture has led to extreme measures, including using fake names for characters and limiting actors to only the pages necessary for their scenes. Cumming further elaborated on the complexities, mentioning performing "in isolation" with green screens and stand-ins, often without knowing the identities of other characters. He noted, "I did the entire film in isolation. Lots of green screen, face replacement. They even gave characters fake names.

I don’t know who I was acting with half the time." Other prominent actors have also hinted at this tight-lipped approach. Florence Pugh and David Harbour admitted they hadn't read the screenplay while promoting Thunderbolts, and Kelsey Grammer, returning as Beast, confirmed Marvel is keeping script details "very secretive" even after a preliminary introduction to the film's concept.
Despite the behind-the-scenes mystery, a new piece of crew merchandise has surfaced, offering an expansive glimpse into the film's massive lineup of heroes and villains, revealing some of the most comic-accurate looks yet for characters. This merchandise confirms Marvel is heavily embracing fan service for the upcoming crossover, showcasing an enormous roster that includes the Fantastic Four, returning Avengers, and a swarm of mutants.
The character designs featured on the merch provide significant details. X-Men characters such as Cyclops, Mystique, Nightcrawler, and Gambit are depicted in designs straight out of the comics. Updated looks are also evident for figures like Doctor Doom and Magneto. Robert Downey Jr. is listed as Doctor Doom, with his design matching a previous tease from Disney’s Shanghai event, featuring distinctive armor and pauldrons. The Fantastic Four – Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Human Torch – are shown wearing tactical vests over their traditional suits. Thor, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth, returns to his Ragnarok and Infinity War style with short hair and new gold pauldrons.
Further details from the crew merchandise highlight Magneto, played by Ian McKellen, in a red-toned version of his original X-Men trilogy suit without a cape, and Patrick Stewart's Professor X returning in his classic silver wheelchair, departing from the yellow hoverchair seen in Multiverse of Madness. Winston Duke's M’Baku appears in regal Wakandan garb, suggesting he may have taken the throne. Tenoch Huerta Mejía's Namor sports a sharp redesign inspired by one of his most famous comic looks.

The list of confirmed cast and characters also includes Anthony Mackie as Captain America (Sam Wilson), Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Letitia Wright as Shuri / Black Panther, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Danny Ramirez as Falcon (Joaquin Torres), Lewis Pullman as Sentry, and an unconfirmed actor for Franklin Richards. Filming for Avengers: Doomsday has reportedly wrapped in London, with a break expected until production on Avengers: Secret Wars begins in 2026. The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a script by Stephen McFeely.
