Union warns politicians against using IEBC as scapegoat ahead of 2027 polls

The Kenya Independent Commissions Workers Union (KICOWU) has warned politicians against using the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission as a scapegoat for possible election losses in 2027.
In a statement on May 17, union's Secretary General Njeru Kanyamba said some political figures were issuing inflammatory statements on social media that could trigger unrest ahead of or after the polls.
“It has come to our notice that some politicians are preparing their guns on IEBC, and uttering words that are likely to erupt into anarchy. This behavior is not only irresponsible but dangerous to our democracy,” said Kanyamba.
Kanyamba noted that the union, which represents staff across independent commissions including the IEBC, is concerned about the safety and wellbeing of its members.
He reminded Kenyans that IEBC staff only announce results and do not elect leaders.
“IEBC does not elect leaders; Kenyans do. Politicians who fail to convince voters should not direct their frustrations at IEBC and its officials,” added Kanyamba.
The union cited past election cycles where IEBC staff suffered threats, violence and even exile. It warned against returning to a culture of intimidation and scapegoating.
“As a union, we shall not sit back while our members are made punching bags by politicians who are not ready to campaign, but are instead preparing excuses in case they lose an election,” he added.
KICOWU urged security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, to take measures to protect IEBC staff both now and during the 2027 elections.
“We call upon the security agencies to take note of leaders beating the drums of war, hatred and discord. IEBC officials are human beings and deserve respect,” he noted.
He appealed to political actors and their supporters to be measured in their public remarks as the country heads into an early election atmosphere.
“This country belongs to all of us, and no one is safe if it plunges into chaos and anarchy,” he warned.
