Developed by a new startup, with Jameson Detwiler serving as its founder and CEO, Chip distinguishes itself with a cutesy face and cartoony proportions. Despite initial skepticism surrounding its appearance, discussions with its inventor reveal a thoughtful design deeply rooted in the future of autonomous transportation.
The existing LSV market is quite established, offering numerous 4- and 6-seat electric models typically ranging from $12,000 to $20,000. These vehicles are commonly utilized in specific environments such as beach communities and gated communities, serving as convenient second or third vehicles for short-distance, slow-moving travel. However, Chip aims to move beyond these conventional uses by integrating forward-looking features that anticipate the advent of all-electric, fully autonomous full-size cars and trucks. This approach suggests a significant shift in transportation paradigms, including how vehicles will be parked, or even the necessity of traditional parking, and fundamentally challenges the long-held notion of car ownership.
A core innovation of Chip is its remote driving service, known as ChipGo. This service is slated to roll out with the delivery of the first consumer vehicles in Chip's launch city, Miami. ChipGo operates by allowing users to hail a remote human operator who can then drive their Chip to a designated parking lot or bring it back to them upon request. This operational model draws parallels with existing technologies such as drones, delivery robots, and various unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs), which often rely on varying levels of artificial intelligence (AI) assisting human piloting duties. The primary justification for this standard was to enhance road user comfort when no human driver is present. Chip takes this concept a step further with its unique "crooked, pixelated smile." According to Jameson Detwiler, this emotive facial design aims to make people feel even more at ease when they encounter a six-passenger LSV moving at 20 mph without a visible driver.
