The UK Foreign Office has issued an urgent travel warning as Poland reintroduces temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania in response to growing concerns over irregular migration. Effective from midnight on Sunday and lasting until 5 August, these measures come amid escalating tensions and protests in Poland regarding migration management. With additional border checks now in place, travelers are advised to expect potential delays and disruptions. The UK government urges caution and recommends staying informed on border conditions as the situation unfolds, ensuring travelers are fully aware of possible travel interruptions.
The mass border controls are in response to accusations by some Polish circles that Germany had been re-routeing migrants to Poland despite them not entering Germany’s border through Poland, which will contravene EU law. German authorities have dismissed such claims, but tensions are still running high, which have fanned more trouble between Germany and Poland. In order to conduct border checks, Poland has deployed a vast number of police officers and soldiers to man 52 border crossings to Germany and 13 to Lithuania.
This action has drawn responses in the adjacent local populations, more so regarding its impacts upon Polish relations with its neighbors. It has been argued in return that this kind of action will not necessarily resolve migration woes but instead advocates that further diplomatic and cooperative movement between Germany and Poland will better handle them. These tensions also represent, consequently, perennial issues that have haunted the European Union in balancing migration flows and border security and ensuring free people movement across the region.
After these changes, the UK Foreign Office has issued updated travel advisories for travelers who will pass through Germany, Lithuania, and Poland borders when there are temporary border controls. Travelers should remain informed about disruptions that will likely take place and prepare accordingly so that they are aware of everything that’s happening.

From 7 July 2025, border agencies in Poland will make additional checks at their German and Lithuanian borders for travelers attempting to travel to Poland. Passengers will need to prepare for possible delays, as checkpoints will shut or introduce restrictions at short notice. Passengers are recommended to review the Polish Border Guard guidance, which is in Polish, and comply with directions issued by officials. These additional checks could result in extended delays, most prominently at busiest border crossings, so additional time should be included for travel.

To tourists visiting Germany or Lithuania, it should also be noted that Poland has put in place border controls both at the German-Polish border and also at the Lithuanian-Polish border. As a result, autos will be stopped and documents will be checked at such border points. Travelers are also advised by the UK Foreign Office to stay up to date with latest information and also to comply strictly with all official guidance provided by Polish authorities. Staying informed about probable delays will also be essential to a smooth trip.
This reimplementation of border controls occurs at a moment when migration matters are causing much discussion throughout Europe. The European Union remains fraught with difficulty when it comes to handling irregular migration, and there are disagreements amongst member states about which course of action to take. Whilst Poland has noted that border controls are needed to maintain national security, other EU member states contend that border controls are antithetical to Schengen Area principles of free movement.
Poland’s announcement that it will apply these temporary solutions has raised more alarm about their long-term impacts upon EU cohesion and national security. Others have contended that individual initiatives, such as strengthening border controls, don’t much address migration’s root causes, economic inequality and geopolitical insecurity. They make the point that there’s more need to act collectively and to address migration’s root causes more directly.
Temporary border controls have also triggered wider EU debate concerning future migration management and border control policy efficiency. As some advocate for enhanced border enforcement, others are urging EU member states to collaborate and resort to more diplomatic initiatives towards attaining more long-term migration solutions. It’s raised key questions concerning just how the EU will balance security requirements with its desire for open borders and free people movement.
Under these new regulations, travelers are vitally advised to stay informed about changes that will have impacts upon travel arrangements and border procedures. Travelers need to be prepared for disruptions and flex their plans, particularly during peak border crossings. Travel arrangement flexibility will enable them to survive this period of heightened security.
Overall, Poland’s decision to reinstate temporary border controls against Germany and Lithuania illustrates rising tensions regarding migration challenges throughout Europe. While such measures are meant to address security challenges, they also highlight broader issues within the European Union regarding migration management. As things continue to unfold, travelers are recommended to stay informed, plan ahead, and follow official advice to minimize disruptions throughout this increased border vigilance.
