Ugandan Music Star Kenneth Mugabi Marks 10 Years of Melodies and Moments

Ugandan musician Kenneth Mugabi celebrated a decade since the release of his acclaimed "Kibun'omu" album and marked his birthday with a memorable career-spanning concert held on Saturday, September 12, at the Ndere Cultural Centre. The event, generously supported by V&A Sherry, brought together fans for an evening filled with music, emotion, and cultural pride.

The night commenced with a solemn and patriotic opening, featuring the anthems of Uganda, Buganda, and Busoga. This was followed by a poignant tribute to the late King Oyo of Tooro, a moment that deeply moved many in the audience, who raised their phones in silent honour of the late monarch's life and enduring legacy. Cultural dancers then took the stage, masterfully setting a vibrant and anticipatory mood before the man of the hour, Kenneth Mugabi, made his grand entrance.

Mugabi captivated the audience from his first note, opening with "People of the Land" to resounding cheers. He seamlessly transitioned into a medley of his popular hits, including "Mumbejja," "Abamuzibe," and "Aka Number," with fans enthusiastically singing along to every lyric. The performance of "My Woman" introduced a theatrical element, featuring a beautifully choreographed sequence that added a unique visual layer to the musical experience.

A significant shift in the concert's mood occurred when Mugabi embraced his traditional Ugandan instrument, the Endingidi. With this instrument, he transported the audience through evocative songs such as "Nambi," a reprise of "People of the Land," and "Ijondarire." This segment highlighted Mugabi's remarkable ability to blend his contemporary sound with Uganda's rich traditional musical heritage, creating a truly unique and authentic performance.

Adding a deeply personal touch, Mugabi paused to honour his late mother, choosing his birthday as the perfect occasion. He performed a heartfelt spoken word piece, set to music, dedicating it to her memory. "Today being my birthday, I want to honor my late mother. She supported me and believed in my dream, so to honour her I wrote this poem for her," he shared with the emotional crowd.

The evening was further enriched by a diverse lineup of guest performers. Eduardo Kayondo, Eli Songs, and Nuel Murungi showcased their talents, while host Richard Tuwangye provided delightful comic relief between sets, keeping the energy high. Mugabi later returned to the stage for a special rendition of "Kibun'omu," largely entrusting the vocals to his devoted audience, who sang along from start to finish, demonstrating their deep connection to his work.

Surprise guests added to the excitement. Tanzanian-Ugandan artiste Mad Ice delighted fans with his performance of "Nkwagala Nyo Mukwano." Following him, Naava Grey received a loud reception, performing her hits "Nteredde" and "Ninga Omuloge" before joining Mugabi for their celebrated collaboration, "Owuwo." Grey then turned the spotlight to Mugabi's birthday, inviting four lucky fans on stage to assist in cutting his cake, culminating in a joyous communal celebration.

The audience's enthusiasm was palpable throughout the night. Specioza Nambi, one of the revellers, expressed her joy, stating, "This was a perfect way to close my week. I am here enjoying my favourite artists' songs and I couldn't be happier." Beyond the stage, guests socialized, posed for photographs at the V&A Sherry backdrop, and enjoyed the brand's sherry liqueur and cocktails.

Roy Ronald Tumwizere, the V&A Brand Manager at UBL, explained the brand's support for Mugabi, stating, "As V&A, we chose to support Kenneth Mugabi because his music aligns with the values we hold so dear -- love and shared moments. Beyond the pure entertainment, Kenneth Mugabi's music conveyed powerful messages on critical societal issues, including sustainability, safe sex, education, literacy, and the promotion of positive social values. For the grand finale, Mugabi returned to the stage to perform an electrifying set of "Naki," "Sanyu," "Muvubuka," "Underwraps," and "Nkwegomba." The audience danced and sang along with unflagging energy, phones raised high, maintaining the vibrant atmosphere at Ndere Cultural Centre until the very end. Though exhausted from dancing, the resounding response indicated that many wished the celebration could have continued even longer, solidifying the evening as a collection of shared memories between the artiste and his adoring audience.
