Uganda's Travel Revolution: Mobile Money Redefines Flight Booking

Ugandans planning various types of international and regional journeys, including business trips, holidays, studies abroad, or visits to family, can now access a simplified digital booking service called Travel by MoMo. This platform is designed to streamline access to air travel by allowing users to search for flights, compare fares, and pay for tickets using mobile money. Developed through a strategic partnership between MTN MoMo Uganda, Next Travel, and the global travel technology company Amadeus, Travel by MoMo enables customers to book flights directly through the MTN MoMo app, removing the necessity of an international debit or credit card.

Launched in Kampala in July 2026, Travel by MoMo integrates flight search, fare comparison, booking, and payment into a single, cohesive digital experience. A notable feature is that all prices are displayed in Uganda shillings, providing clarity on costs in local currency. For many travelers, this service offers a much-needed alternative to navigating numerous airline websites or relying exclusively on physical travel agents to arrange their journeys.

The flight booking process through Travel by MoMo is user-friendly and efficient. Users begin by entering their departure and destination airports, selecting desired travel dates, and specifying the number of passengers. The platform then presents a range of available flight options, allowing travelers to compare fares, airlines, and schedules to choose an itinerary that best suits their needs and budget. After selecting a flight, customers enter the necessary passenger details and complete the payment using their MTN MoMo wallets. Upon successful booking, travelers receive confirmation and an electronic ticket through the platform's established delivery process. This process is particularly beneficial for individuals organizing regional business trips, students traveling to universities, families planning holidays, and Ugandans embarking on international journeys.

One of the platform's most significant advantages is its accessibility through mobile money payments. Historically, many online travel bookings have required international payment cards or other alternative payment methods that might not be readily available or convenient for all customers. Travel by MoMo addresses this by offering a viable option for travelers who can easily fund their mobile money wallets but may not possess traditional international payment cards. The display of fares in Uganda shillings further enhances transparency, allowing customers to fully understand the cost of their chosen itinerary before confirming payment. The service effectively merges MTN MoMo's robust payment infrastructure with Next Travel's extensive travel management expertise and Amadeus' cutting-edge global travel technology, which provides access to a vast network of airline schedules and fares.

The partnership itself reflects a shared vision to enhance traveler convenience. Jonathan Martin Kyeyo, General Manager of Next Travel, stated at the launch that the service was meticulously designed to meet travelers' demands for speed, transparency, convenience, and choice. Phrase Lubega, Managing Director of MTN MoMo Uganda, added that the platform was developed in direct response to the challenges customers face when booking flights, such as navigating disparate websites and complex payment options. This collaboration exemplifies a broader trend where digital financial services are expanding beyond everyday transactions like sending money, paying bills, and buying airtime, becoming integral to how consumers access a wider array of services.

While digital booking undeniably simplifies travel planning, customers are advised to carefully review the conditions attached to their tickets before finalizing any transaction. Essential checks include ensuring that passenger names precisely match their passports or other applicable travel documents, confirming departure dates and times, and verifying baggage allowances, stopovers, and any potential additional charges. Those undertaking international travel should also diligently establish the visa and entry requirements for their respective destinations. Furthermore, it is crucial to review ticket cancellation, amendment, and refund conditions prior to payment, as these policies can vary significantly based on the fare type and applicable booking terms. Travelers should always protect their MoMo PINs and verification codes and retain their payment confirmation and electronic tickets for future reference.

As digital services increasingly integrate into daily life, Travel by MoMo offers Ugandans an innovative and convenient method to plan and pay for air travel using a familiar mobile money service. While the platform centralizes several booking steps, it does not eliminate the need for proactive planning or verifying specific travel requirements. Ugandans can explore available routes and fares either through the official Travel by MoMo platform or by accessing the feature directly within the MTN MoMo app by navigating to 'Lifestyle' and then selecting 'Travel'.
