Twitter Fights Fake News with Groundbreaking Live News Streaming Initiative
Twitter is launching a new live streaming feature for news content, aiming to combat the spread of fake news by providing curated, credible information. This service will appear on user timelines during major events, leveraging partnerships with regional news stations to deliver timely updates and counter misinformation.
Social media giant Twitter is poised to introduce a new feature: live streaming of news content directly to its platform. This initiative is a significant step in the ongoing battle against the pervasive issue of fake news, a constant challenge for social media companies. Many recent feature introductions by platforms like Facebook and Twitter have primarily aimed at combating the spread of misinformation, and Twitter is now intensifying its efforts.
The upcoming live stream feature for news stories will appear prominently next to users’ timelines whenever a major incident unfolds. In a statement, the company emphasized its commitment, stating, “we’re continuing to work on new ways we can surface credible and relevant information to help people stay informed.” While live streaming has been a component of Twitter for several years, this particular news live streaming will be meticulously curated to ensure accuracy and relevance.
This feature has been under development for some time and recently underwent testing. As an example, Twitter live streamed reporting from a U.S. TV station during the tragic Florida school shooting incident that claimed 17 lives. Footage from Miami’s WSVN was broadcast on Twitter and garnered more than 50,000 views, demonstrating the potential reach and impact. Kayvon Beykpour, Twitter’s Video GM, told Buzzfeed News, “By pairing live video with the conversation on Twitter, there is no faster way to see what’s happening in the world.”
Twitter’s news live streaming functionality will operate through strategic partnerships with regional news stations. These collaborations will enable the platform to curate stories effectively and select appropriate footage for live broadcast. When a significant event occurs, the live streaming feature will be displayed alongside users’ timelines. Clicking on the live streamed video will direct users to a dedicated timeline featuring tweets about the event, which are “algorithmically selected” for display based on their relevance and credibility.
This new introduction represents the latest effort to combat the menace of fake news on social media, a problem that has escalated over the past two years. In countries like Nigeria, for instance, users have frequently encountered a multitude of fake news stories going viral on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. A recent example involved a fabricated story circulated about Fulani killings, accompanied by a viral photograph. This false narrative claimed Fulani herdsmen were killing people along the crucial Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Investigations revealed the story was entirely untrue, and its accompanying image dated back to a deadly armed robbery that occurred eight years prior. Despite its falsehood, the story had already achieved critical mass before it was eventually debunked and removed. Twitter’s curated live news streaming aims to provide a reliable source of information, thereby counteracting such deceptive narratives.
