Trump Unleashes Global Tariff Hike: US Trade War Escalates to 15%

US President Donald Trump has announced his decision to impose global tariffs of 15%, escalating his aggressive trade policy just days after a Supreme Court ruling invalidated his previous import taxes. Initially, Trump stated on Friday that he would implement a 10% levy on all goods entering the United States, replacing the tariffs struck down by the court. However, by Saturday, he declared on his Truth Social platform that this rate would be increased to the maximum 15% permitted under a previously unused trade law. These new tariffs are set to come into effect on Tuesday, February 24, and are temporary, able to remain in place for approximately five months (150 days) before the administration must seek congressional approval for their continuation.
The President clarified that this decision was made following a comprehensive review of Friday's Supreme Court ruling, which he described as a "ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American decision on Tariffs." In a significant 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court found that President Trump had exceeded his executive powers when he implemented widespread global tariffs in the previous year. The court determined that the 1977 law, known as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump had relied upon, "does not authorize the President to impose tariffs." This ruling was perceived as a firm rebuke of the Republican leader's sweeping and often arbitrary duties, which have been a hallmark of his international trade policy.
Despite the judicial setback, Trump remains committed to his tariff strategy. He affirmed that his administration would spend the coming months exploring alternative, "legally permissible" methods to impose tariffs, effectively aiming to circumvent the Supreme Court's recent ruling. This announcement is the latest development in a fluctuating process that has seen numerous tariff levels applied to countries exporting goods to the United States, frequently altered or revoked by the Trump administration over the past year.
According to a White House fact sheet, certain sectors will be exempt from these new duties. These exemptions include pharmaceutical products and goods entering the US under the terms of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). While Trump has historically used varying tariff rates to influence both allied and adversarial nations, the White House confirmed on Friday that even US trading partners with existing separate tariff agreements would be subject to this new global tariff.
President Trump responded with fury to the Supreme Court's ruling, which saw two of his own nominated justices vote against him. He alleged, without providing evidence, that the court was swayed by foreign interests. "I'm ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what's right for our country," Trump told reporters, underscoring his strong disapproval of the decision.
