Trump Media Ditches Crypto Ventures, Shaking Investor Confidence

Trump Media and Technology Group is reportedly withdrawing from two significant crypto deals with Crypto.com, including a prediction market and a large Cronos treasury. This decision is attributed to market saturation in the digital asset treasury space, despite former President Trump's generally supportive stance on cryptocurrency. However, existing exchange-traded funds involving the company will continue.

Trump Media Ditches Crypto Ventures, Shaking Investor Confidence

Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), the media company backed by President Donald Trump, has reportedly decided to withdraw from two of its previously announced cryptocurrency deals with Crypto.com. This development was initially reported by Axios, which cited comments from Kevin McGurn, the interim CEO of fusion energy company TAE, regarding TMTG's decision.

The two agreements in question involved a prediction market called Truth Predict, designed to allow users to wager on various events such as sports games and elections, and a Cronos treasury. Last year, Trump Media had stated its intention to collaborate with Crypto.com to establish this Cronos treasury, which was slated to be backed by $6.4 billion. The native coin of Crypto.com's platform is Cronos.

The primary reason for Trump Media's pullback, as indicated by McGurn, is the significant saturation of the market for digital asset treasury companies over the past year. While digital asset treasuries, which involve companies building balance sheets with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, saw an explosion in popularity following the lead of firms like Nasdaq-listed software company Strategy, a slump in crypto prices since October has adversely affected several companies that adopted this business model. McGurn emphasized that the decision was driven more by "competitive dynamics" rather than any regulatory concerns related to a crypto company associated with the president.

Former President Trump has historically campaigned on a platform supportive of the crypto space, garnering backing from major players within the industry. Since taking office, he has also been involved in the crypto ecosystem, including launching a meme coin and his family backing a crypto project named World Liberty Financial.

Despite the cancellation of these two specific deals, Axios reported that certain exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that debuted last year, involving Trump Media, special purpose acquisition company Yorkville Acquisition Corp., and Crypto.com, are set to continue as planned.
