Troops Dismantle Illegal Refining Sites, Arrest Felons in One Week

The Nigerian military has reported significant progress in its internal security operations, particularly in dismantling illegal refining sites and combating oil theft in the Niger Delta region. According to a statement released by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, troops discovered and dismantled 35 illegal refining sites in the creeks of the Niger Delta. During the anti-oil theft operation, troops of Operation Delta Safe apprehended 29 suspected oil thieves within the week.

In addition to these efforts, troops of Operation Hadin Kai and Fansan Yamma arrested 70 suspected bandits and successfully rescued 21 kidnap hostages between April 17 and 25, 2025. The operations also led to the recovery of stolen products valued at over N95 million during the same period.

The military's efforts included deactivating 62 crude oil cooking ovens, 71 dugout pits, 18 boats, three speedboats, 36 storage tanks, and 88 drums. They also recovered 89,684 liters of stolen crude oil, 46,538 liters of illegally refined AGO (Automotive Gas Oil), and 1,650 liters of DPK (Dual Purpose Kerosene). Other items recovered include pumping machines, drilling machines, tricycles, motorcycles, mobile phones, and four vehicles.

Furthermore, troops killed several terrorists during the operations and recovered a substantial cache of assorted arms, including machine guns, RPG tubes, automatic weapons, locally fabricated guns, and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). A significant amount of ammunition and live cartridges was also recovered during the period under review.
