LASEPA Secures Grant to Prevent Cholera Outbreak

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has obtained a $225,000 intervention grant from the Government of Japan through a partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during the 2025 ministerial briefing, marking the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's second term.
According to Wahab, the grant will be used to enhance the capacity of informal food and water vendors, as well as waste workers, in Lagos environments affected by flooding. The goal is to prevent cholera outbreaks.
LASEPA has also partnered with Ororo Waste Management Company Limited to promote the recycling of used cooking oil. This initiative aims to address the improper management and disposal of used cooking oil, which poses significant risks to public health, energy resources, and the environment. The partnership focuses on wealth creation, environmental sustainability, and public health safety.
Throughout the year, LASEPA monitored 140 hospitality facilities, including supermarkets, nightclubs, and bakeries, to ensure they comply with state environmental laws regarding safety and cleanliness. Additionally, 160 abatement notices were issued to individuals and organizations found violating laws related to the indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into the lagoon or other forms of water and land pollution.
The agency's monitoring efforts have helped ensure that regulatory standards and best practices are effectively implemented in manufacturing facilities and chemical warehouses across Lagos State. This has led to a reduction in fire outbreaks and chemical spills in the state's chemical markets.
Wahab also mentioned a joint monitoring and abatement exercise led by the General Manager of LASEPA at the Ojota chemical market. This visit, conducted with a team from NESREA and the Taskforce on Environmental Protection, aimed to monitor compliance with safety regulations, issue warnings for non-compliance, and establish a foundation for chemical registry at various markets.
