NYSC Explains Why Prospective Members Can't Undergo Drug Integrity Test

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, clarified that the NYSC is unable to conduct certified drug integrity tests on prospective corps members due to the absence of provisions for such tests in the scheme's enabling Act. This explanation was provided during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), in Abuja, where Marwa had requested the NYSC to perform these tests and to post corps members to NDLEA rehabilitation centers.
While the NYSC DG acceded to the request for posting corps members to rehabilitation centers, he noted that the drug integrity tests could not be implemented without a change in policy and an amendment to the NYSC Act. He stated that the NYSC would act accordingly if it becomes a government policy. During the visit, Gen. Nafiu praised Marwa for his achievements as Lagos State governor and at the NDLEA.
Gen. Marwa mentioned that the NDLEA has established rehabilitation centers in 30 states and plans to extend this to all 36 states and the FCT. He also proposed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two agencies to enhance cooperation.
In Sokoto State, Governor Ahmed Aliyu urged new corps members to embrace unity, discipline, and patriotism. Represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Muhammad Mustapha, the governor encouraged corps members to integrate with their host communities, respecting their cultures and traditions. He assured them of the state's commitment to corps members' welfare, emphasizing Sokoto's peaceful environment and the safety provided by the government and its people.
The state NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Usman Yakubu Yaro, advised the corps members to approach their service year with responsibility and selflessness, actively participating in all camp activities and adhering to regulations. He encouraged them to take advantage of lectures, drills, and training sessions to equip themselves for future success and to build lasting friendships. The Oath of Allegiance was administered by Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Muhammad Sa’aidu Sifawa, represented by Senior Magistrate 1, Buhari Abdullahi Maigwandu.
