First Lady Declares Malaria a National Emergency and Public Health Challenge in Nigeria

The wife of the President of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has characterized malaria as a significant public health challenge and a national emergency within the country. This statement was released in Abuja by Deji Elumoye to commemorate World Malaria Day 2025.
In her address, the First Lady advocated for a concerted effort from all Nigerians to eradicate the disease, emphasizing that the responsibility to end malaria rests with the collective voices, choices, and actions of the nation's citizens. Mrs. Tinubu's message included a firm declaration that Nigeria shoulders the heaviest global burden of malaria, necessitating intensified efforts to reverse this concerning trend.
The theme for this year's World Malaria Day, "Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite,” serves as both an urgent call to action and a message of optimism. It challenges everyone to renew investments in crucial, life-saving interventions, heighten public awareness, and revitalize the collective commitment required to eliminate malaria definitively.
Mrs. Tinubu also stressed the importance of maintaining clean environments free from stagnant water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. She urged all government agencies, private sector partners, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), healthcare professionals, and community leaders to rededicate themselves to the fight against malaria with a renewed sense of urgency and unwavering resolve.
Concluding her message, the First Lady reiterated that the end of malaria depends on the collective voices, choices, and actions of every Nigerian.
